Ridley Scott\u2019s horrifying sci-fi masterpiece has inspired a number of well-loved video games \u2013 everything from Doom to System Shock to the recently released <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/review\/observation\/the-thrill-of-taking-back-control\" >(and fantastic) Observation<\/a>. However, actual games based on the Alien franchise has been, uh, well a rollercoaster ride in terms of quality. To be frank, reader, most of them are bad. Real bad. However, among that sea of terrible licensed titles are several fantastic games set in the Alien universe.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking to celebrate the release by digitally eviscerating (or getting eaten by) xenomorphs, here are the best Alien games to play.<\/p>\n<article class=\"embedded-entity\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3.amazonaws.com\/prod-media.gameinformer.com\/styles\/body_default\/s3\/2019\/05\/14\/604dd9c6\/alien3.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" typeof=\"Image\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/article>\n<h4>Alien 3<\/h4>\n<p><em>Platforms<\/em>: Sega Genesis, Super Nintendo<br \/><em>Release<\/em>: 1993<\/p>\n<p>Funny how one of the most critically panned (undeservingly so, your humble narrator might argue) entries in the series have resulted in one of Alien\u2019s most interesting and even fun games. This side-scroller isn\u2019t that scary, but it does let you play as a very bald Ellen Ripley burning through hordes Aliens and Facehuggers with a flamethrower. Not bad.<\/p>\n<article class=\"embedded-entity\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3.amazonaws.com\/prod-media.gameinformer.com\/styles\/body_default\/s3\/2019\/05\/14\/bed35c90\/avp.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" typeof=\"Image\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/article>\n<h4>Alien Versus Predator<\/h4>\n<p><em>Platform<\/em>: PC<br \/><em>Release<\/em>: 1998<\/p>\n<p>Long before developer Rebellion was getting into the slo-mo headshot game with Sniper Elite, it turned the popular comic crossover series pitting two of 20<sup>th<\/sup> Century Fox\u2019s biggest baddies against each other into a video game \u2013 and a pretty darn good one to boot. Alien Versus Predator (AVP) has three campaigns that each have\u00a0their own distinct tone and playstyle. If you play\u00a0the Marine path, you are\u00a0a soldier stumbling around in claustrophobic and dark environments, blasting Aliens and hopefully not getting insta-killed by a Facehugger. If you chose the Predator, you lop\u00a0heads off from the shadows and blow people into pieces with your shoulder cannon. And, of course, as the Alien, you munch\u00a0on scientists and throw androids into whirling fans to cut them up. With a ridiculous amount of gory slapstick, AVP is\u00a0one of the most enjoyable games of its era, and still holds up today.<\/p>\n<article class=\"embedded-entity\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3.amazonaws.com\/prod-media.gameinformer.com\/styles\/body_default\/s3\/2019\/05\/14\/7a9df365\/avp2.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" typeof=\"Image\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/article>\n<h4>Alien Versus Predator 2<\/h4>\n<p><em>Platform<\/em>: PC<br \/><em>Release<\/em>: 2001<\/p>\n<p>Alien Versus Predator 2 didn\u2019t mess that much with the formula of the first game. Monolith, taking over for Rebellion, just added in a decent<i>ish<\/i> story, made the game a bit brighter, and buffed out the gore. We\u2019re not going to sit here and tell you that Extinction, a real-time strategy game pitting the Aliens against the marines and Predators is up there with the likes of Warcraft or Command and Conquer. However, to reiterate: it\u2019s a real-time strategy game pitting Aliens against marines and Predators. You\u2019re either onboard or not at this point.<\/p>\n<article class=\"embedded-entity\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/s3.amazonaws.com\/prod-media.gameinformer.com\/styles\/body_default\/s3\/2019\/05\/14\/8bd2e044\/alien2.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" typeof=\"Image\" class=\"image-style-body-default\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/article>\n<h4>Aliens Infestation<\/h4>\n<p>Platform: Nintendo DS<br \/>\nRelease: 2011<\/p>\n<p>Infestation is a thing you didn\u2019t know you wanted: a game that uses the Metroid formula set in the Alien universe where you play as a squad of colonial marines.\u00a0And guess what? It\u2019s actually good. <i>Really, really <\/i>good (read our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gameinformer.com\/games\/aliens_infestation\/b\/nintendo_ds\/archive\/2011\/10\/11\/the-metroid-formula-infests-the-alien-franchise.aspx\">review<\/a> if you don&#8217;t believe me). If you\u2019ve got a DS (or 3DS) somewhere, this one is definitely worth playing. After years upon years of mediocre licensed shooters and games that cribbed hard from <em>Aliens<\/em>, Isolation put players on a giant space station that faithfully recreated the original film\u2019s retro-future style with analog computers and blinking lights and pitted them against an invincible killing machine. Gone are the fragile bugs of Aliens that blew apart in a hail of bullets.
