{"id":147872,"date":"2019-07-08T21:00:12","date_gmt":"2019-07-08T13:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/featured\/-1794319\/"},"modified":"2019-07-08T21:00:12","modified_gmt":"2019-07-08T13:00:12","slug":"hands-on-dr-mario-world-is-nintendos-mobile-drug","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itteacheritfreelance.hk\/test\/wordpress\/2019\/07\/08\/hands-on-dr-mario-world-is-nintendos-mobile-drug\/","title":{"rendered":"Hands-On: \u2018Dr. Mario World\u2019 Is Nintendo\u2019s Mobile Drug"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ever since announcing its partnership with DeNA a few years ago to produce mobile games, Nintendo has already brought some of its biggest franchises to iOS and Android devices. <em>Super Mario, Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing<\/em>, and soon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/games\/wait-a-little-longer-for-mario-kart-tour-on-mobile-1772406\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Mario Kart<\/em><\/a>\u00a0are all on the most ubiquitous pieces of tech out there. However, some true heavy hitters like <em>Zelda <\/em>and <em>Metroid <\/em>and <em>Smash Bros<\/em>. are still missing. That\u2019s why I was surprised to learn that Nintendo\u2019s next mobile is based on the fun and catchy but relatively B-tier puzzle game <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/games\/the-ultimate-super-smash-bros-character-guide-dr-mario-1761062\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Dr. Mario<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, after playing <em>Dr. Mario World<\/em> myself I totally get it. Nintendo wants to be the ones who give you the next <em>Candy Crush Saga<\/em> and reap in <em>that<\/em> kind of success. I don\u2019t know if this will do that, but if nothing else <em>Dr. Mario World<\/em> is a clever little mobile puzzle game.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas most falling block puzzle game are about creating and clearing huge solid masses of blocks, <em>Dr. Mario<\/em> has players creating lines to target specific colorful viruses. And that\u2019s still the case in <em>Dr. Mario World<\/em>. But while that general concept remains, this mobile game plays surprisingly different from the NES original.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8b4DNKfs_tU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>For starters, instead of dropping pills down, in <em>Dr. Mario World<\/em> you drag them up from the bottom. Nintendo says this helps visibility with one-handed touch screen play, but you do need to rethink your whole puzzle approach. You can drag pills side to side as they float up but you can\u2019t pull them back down. My best combos came from quickly dragging and T-spinning pieces of used pills over to new strategic locations before they floated out of the window. The game calls for a different kind of quick-thinking puzzle game reflex.<\/p>\n<p>My demo also showcased several twists players can expect in the 200 levels. The limited number of randomized pills turns each around into a larger puzzle in and of itself. Trigger bombs or bouncing koopa shells to take out whole clusters of viruses. Clear as many viruses as possible with unlimited blocks like in the original game. It stays surprisingly fresh. And that\u2019s before you get into power-ups like stem cell-esque miracle pills that clear viruses of all colors or the special abilities of the different doctor and helper versions of Mario characters I can\u2019t quite reveal yet.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D8jSYSMRb10?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Unfortunately, <em>Dr. Mario World<\/em> is still a free-to-play mobile game. There\u2019s a multiplayer mode that might tear me away from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/games\/tetris-99-is-the-only-good-battle-royale-game-1774719\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Tetris 99<\/em><\/a>\u00a0but it requires a pointless internet connection even in single-player. There are inconvenient, flow-halting hearts and stamina bars to worry about. And running out of medicine forces you to spend real money or wait to die, just like America\u2019s actual health care system. But it\u2019s not exactly Nintendo\u2019s fault the mobile game scene is the way it is. You people wouldn\u2019t even spend ten dollars on a pretty good Mario runner game.<\/p>\n<p><em>Dr. Mario World<\/em> comes to iOS and Android on July 10.
