The countdown has begun! The 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing is just days away (July 20). It’s going to be quite a celebration, and Lego wanted to contribute in a big way.

A very big way — as in life-sized. The Lego crew designed and built a faithful reproduction of the space suit worn by Apollo 11 astronauts when they set foot on the lunar surface back in 1969.

What does it take to create a brick-built tribute the Apollo 11 crew? It starts with building a team that has the right stuff. Lego assembled a group of 10 designers and master builders for this project.

Once the design has been finalized, it’s time to gather supplies and start building. This statue required a whopping 30,000 Lego bricks — 15 times as many as it takes to build Lego’s awesome, 1-meter tall Saturn V rocket!

Interestingly enough, those 30,000 bricks stick to a pretty limited palette. The build uses just 10 different colors.

So what do you do with a life-sized Lego Apollo 11 astronaut statue? You take it to the anniversary party, of course. Lego will be taking part in the four-day Apollo celebration being hosted by the Smithsonian from July 18th to the 20th.

If you’re planning to drop by the National Mall in DC to check it out, you’re in for a real treat. Lego will actually let visitors help construct another massive build during the Apollo 50 Festival.

Yes, you could be lucky enough to assist Lego’s builders in the creation of a gigantic tribute to space exploration: a 20-foot-tall version of “a critical component to the next phase of Mars exploration.”

Lego is also helping to celebrate Canada’s role in the moon landing. On September 2, they’ll debut the tallest Lego rocket ever built at the Ontario Science Center. It will be built from 80,000 bricks and is going to stand 11 feet tall. It’s even going to feature light and sound effects… and will have a built-in smoke machine.

More on Geek.com:

Lego Launches Stunning 50th Anniversary Tribute to Apollo 11

Best Space Documentaries to Stream Before Apollo 11 Anniversary

Relive Apollo 11 Moon Landing With NASA’s Restore Mission Control Center

A team of 10 designers and “Master Builders” from LEGO build a life-size LEGO model of astronaut Buzz Aldrin in his iconic pose on the moon.
