New emoji are coming to iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch this fall (via Apple)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n

Celebrate the slow-but-inevitable demise of plain text language with a sneak peek at new emoji designs.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2019 collection<\/a>, known as Emoji 12.0, goes heavy on inclusivity, ensuring users have more opportunities to personalize their character content.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Apple is \u2026 revealing the newest designs that bring even more diversity to the keyboard, alongside fun and exciting additions to popular categories of food, animals, activities, and smiley faces,” the tech titan wrote in an announcement<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a major update to the Holding Hands icon, typically used to represent couples and relationships, you’ll soon be able to select any combination of skin tone and\/or gender to better match real life.<\/span><\/p>\n

Many additional emoji categories are getting exciting updates (via Apple)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Cupertino, meanwhile, takes full credit for the introduction of more disability-themed emoji, claiming the inclusion of a guide dog, ear with hearing aid, prosthetic arm and leg, and wheelchairs are due to its proposal to the Unicode Consortium last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Celebrating diversity in all its many forms is integral to Apple’s values and these new options help fill a significant gap in the emoji keyboard,” the company said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Other exciting additions include new animals (sloth, flamingo, skunk, orangutan), food (falafel, head of garlic, stick of butter, waffles), clothes (high-vis vest, one-piece bathing suit, saree), and activities (banjo, parachute, kite, yo-yo).<\/span><\/p>\n

And I am sure that yawning-face emoji will come in handy. A lot.<\/span><\/p>\n

New designs bring more diversity to the keyboard (via Apple)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Google is really taking equality to the next level<\/a> by supporting 53 emojis with gender-inclusive designs.<\/p>\n

“For example, the emoji for ‘police officer’ is commonly displayed as male and the ‘person getting haircut’ is female. These kinds of design decisions can reinforce gender stereotypes,” emoji creative director Jennifer Daniel wrote in a blog post. “So with this update, emojis that don’t specify gender will default to a gender-ambiguous design. You can still choose between male and female presentations if you want to opt into a gender on your keyboard.”<\/p>\n

The Unicode Consortium in February unveiled 230 new icons<\/a>, revealing text substitutes ideal for chats about adorable aquatic creatures, favorite recipes, laundry, and outer space.<\/span><\/p>\n

Apple and Google are both expected to launch their own interpretations of this year’s characters later this year for iOS 13 and Android Q, respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n

Until they are supported on your device, new emojis may display as an empty square (\u20de).<\/span><\/p>\n
