{"id":150559,"date":"2019-07-19T20:54:28","date_gmt":"2019-07-19T12:54:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/featured\/-1796464\/"},"modified":"2019-07-19T20:54:28","modified_gmt":"2019-07-19T12:54:28","slug":"google-doodle-takes-you-on-a-journey-to-the-moon-and-back","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itteacheritfreelance.hk\/test\/wordpress\/2019\/07\/19\/google-doodle-takes-you-on-a-journey-to-the-moon-and-back\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Doodle Takes You On a Journey to the Moon and Back"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/doodle-650x366.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"figcaption\">Google celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Moon landing with a special Doodle (via Google)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fifty years ago, NASA&#8217;s Apollo 11 mission changed the world and the idea of what is possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twenty years ago, Google did the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the two mega organizations have teamed up to celebrate innovation, exploration, and history in one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/doodles\/50th-anniversary-of-the-moon-landing\"  rel=\"noopener\">animated Doodle<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The four-and-a-half-minute video (presented in portrait for easy smartphone viewing) takes you on a journey to the Moon and back, narrated by former astronaut and Apollo 11 command module pilot Michael Collins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;After a big breakfast, our rocket lifted off in the morning of July 16, 1969,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Neil, Buzz, and I felt the weight of the world on our shoulders.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uzbquKCqEQY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collins was just one of some 400,000 people who contributed to Project Apollo\u2014most of them factory workers, scientists, and engineers who never left Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Margaret Hamilton, who led the team that developed the onboard flight software for all of NASA&#8217;s manned Apollo missions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google this week set out to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.google\/products\/maps\/margaret-hamilton-apollo-11-tribute\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">shine a light on Hamilton&#8217;s influence<\/a>, and on the field of software engineering, by positioning more than 107,000 mirrors at the Ivanpah Solar Facility in the Mojave Desert to reflect the light of the Moon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result is a <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/B7CnVGtd1_Y\"  rel=\"noopener\">1.4-square-mile portrait of Hamilton<\/a>\u2014bigger than New York City&#8217;s Central Park.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We thought our on-board computer was very sophisticated,&#8221; on July 20, 1969. Not long after, Armstrong became the first human to step foot on Earth&#8217;s satellite.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collins, meanwhile, spent his day flying solo around the Moon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Behind the Moon, I was by myself. All alone, but not lonesome,&#8221; he said. &#8220;If you counted, there were 3 billion\u2014plus two\u2014people on one side, and me on the other. I felt very comfortable back there. I even had hot coffee.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 17th American in space, Collins is one of only 24 people to have flown to the Moon, which he orbited 30 times.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kKTZouDScj4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The first time we saw the Moon up close, it was a magnificent spectacle. It was huge,&#8221; he reminisced. &#8220;The sun was coming around it, cascading and making a golden halo that filled our entire window.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;As impressive as the view was of this alien Moon seen up close, it was nothing compared to the site of the tiny Earth,&#8221; he added. &#8220;The Earth was the main show. The Earth was it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The trio returned to Earth on July 24, 1969. They were followed by 10 more Apollo astronauts, with the final mission taking place in 1972.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their legacy, however, continues, with milestones like the International Space Station and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/nasa-reveals-top-three-designs-for-space-friendly-homes-on-mars-1781096\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">plans for a mission to Mars<\/a>.
