{"id":151038,"date":"2019-07-22T17:39:04","date_gmt":"2019-07-22T09:39:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/featured\/-1796841\/"},"modified":"2019-07-22T17:39:04","modified_gmt":"2019-07-22T09:39:04","slug":"nasa-spacecraft-ready-for-artemis-1-lunar-mission","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itteacheritfreelance.hk\/test\/wordpress\/2019\/07\/22\/nasa-spacecraft-ready-for-artemis-1-lunar-mission\/","title":{"rendered":"NASA Spacecraft Ready for Artemis 1 Lunar Mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/artemis-1-650x366.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"figcaption\">Vice President Mike Pence announced the completion of NASA&#8217;s Orion crew capsule for the first Artemis lunar mission (via NASA)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing, Vice President Mike Pence on Saturday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/press-release\/vice-president-unveils-nasa-spacecraft-for-artemis-1-lunar-mission-on-moon-landing\"  rel=\"noopener\">announced the completion<\/a> of NASA&#8217;s Orion crew capsule for the first Artemis lunar mission.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effort\u2014named after Greek deity Artemis, twin sister of Apollo and goddess of the Moon\u2014will help put the first woman and the next man on the Moon&#8217;s south pole by 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also aims to establish sustainable missions within a decade.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Thanks to the hard work of the men and women of NASA, and of American industry, the Orion crew vehicle for the Artemis 1 mission is complete and ready to begin preparations for its historic first flight,&#8221; Pence said during a speech at the Florida&#8217;s Kennedy Space Center.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NASA&#8217;s goal 50 years ago was to prove it could land humans on the Moon and return them safely to Earth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, the agency <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is being forced<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wants to revisit Earth&#8217;s satellite (in a sustainable way) as a sort of pit stop on an eventual trip to Mars.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In February, Pence demanded the National Aeronautics and Space Administration put new boot prints in the lunar dust within five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help the process along, President Donald Trump in May <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/trump-proposes-another-1-6b-for-nasas-return-to-moon-1787049\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">proposed another $1.6 billion of support<\/a>, bringing the total funding request to $22.6 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/U74ix_fHEfs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Trump administration &#8220;has given us a bold direction to return to the Moon by 2024 and then go forward to Mars,&#8221; NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said over the weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Their direction is not empty rhetoric,&#8221; he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The exact timeline remains unclear: Sometime in the next five years, Artemis 1 will launch NASA&#8217;s Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System (SLS) rocket around the Moon to test the system, before landing humans back on the planetoid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that Orion&#8217;s crew module and European Service Module (the latter contributed by ESA) are complete, engineers have begun joining the pieces together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Later this year, the spacecraft\u2014complete with heatshield backshell panel\u2014will travel to NASA&#8217;s Plum Brook Station in Ohio for testing, then return to Kennedy for final processing and inspections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Similar to the 1960s, we too have an opportunity to take a giant leap forward for all of humanity,&#8221; Bridenstine said. &#8220;And we are well on our way to getting this done.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following two initial missions\u2014Artemis 1 (uncrewed) and Artemis 2 (crewed)\u2014Artemis 3 will launch the next American moonwalkers into &#8220;a new era of exploration,&#8221;
