The sand beneath your feet doesn’t provide the sturdy foundation concrete or grace does. It’s constantly shifting and changing underneath you as you move, simultaneously easier on your feet than a hard surface and also a greater challenge than you might have anticipated.

Whether you’re looking to replicate that feeling for training purposes or just miss the feeling of going for a walk on the beach, Nike’s newest running innovation has you covered. Joyride is the name of their newest tech, a sole cushioning that is made up of thousands of microbeads made of what they call a “thermoplastic elastomer” (described as a mix of plastic and rubber).

The Nike Joyride Run Flyknit (Photo Credit: Nike)

Joyride features none of the pressurized gas or foam that so many running shoes rely on these days. The shoe cushions your feet in a way no other running shoe has until now, creating a constantly changing base that molds to and pads your foot with every step you take.

The primary intent behind the innovation is recovery for runners. Joyride cushioning is designed to give your legs and feet a day off from the hard work they do. The thousands of microbeads absorb shock and stress as you walk or run, easing stress and tension in your lower body’s muscles. There’s no sock liner between your foot and the sole so while wearing the shoe you’ll be able to appreciate the fullest benefits of the Joyride tech.

Each pod of Joyride beads is designed differently with the intent of providing the safest, most effective experience. The heel features the heaviest Joyride padding for added shock absorption while the front of the foot is slimmer in order to maximize responsiveness. The tuning of the middle pod is specifically made to smooth the transition from heel to foot with each step and stride.

The Joyride tech is debuting in the Joyride Run Flyknit, which is available now for Nike Members and will be released globally on August 15.
