{"id":152063,"date":"2019-07-26T16:50:04","date_gmt":"2019-07-26T08:50:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/featured\/-1797600\/"},"modified":"2019-07-26T16:50:04","modified_gmt":"2019-07-26T08:50:04","slug":"presidential-hopeful-tulsi-gabbard-sues-google-over-alleged-censorship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itteacheritfreelance.hk\/test\/wordpress\/2019\/07\/26\/presidential-hopeful-tulsi-gabbard-sues-google-over-alleged-censorship\/","title":{"rendered":"Presidential Hopeful Tulsi Gabbard Sues Google Over Alleged Censorship"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Google-Header-Image-690-650x366.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"figcaption\">Photo Credit: Pawe\u0142 Czerwi\u0144ski\/Unsplash<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-shot presidential candidate Tulsi Gabbard is suing Google for violating her right to free speech.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Representative for Hawaii claims the tech titan infringed on her First Amendment freedom when it briefly suspended Gabbard&#8217;s advertising account after June&#8217;s Democratic debates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lawsuit, filed Thursday in a Los Angeles federal court, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scribd.com\/document\/419758358\/Tulsi-Gabbard-v-Google\"  rel=\"noopener\">suggests<\/a> Google &#8220;arbitrarily and forcibly&#8221; deactivated her account for six hours on June 28\u2014prime time for raising money and reaching potential voters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;During this time, Google obfuscated and dissembled with a series of inconsistent and incoherent reasons for its actions,&#8221; Gabbard&#8217;s media team wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tulsi2020.com\/press\/2019-07-25-tulsi-gabbard-fights-back-against-big-techs-dangerous-dominance\"  rel=\"noopener\">a press release<\/a>. &#8220;In the end, Google never explained to us why Tulsi&#8217;s account was suspended.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The campaign also maintains that its emails were being directed to Gmail spam folders &#8220;at a disproportionately high rate&#8221; compared to other Democratic presidential hopefuls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gabbard is seeking an injunction against Google from interfering in the election and damages of at least $50 million.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">TULSI2020: In the hours following the 1st debate, while millions of Americans searched for info about Tulsi, Google suspended her search ad account w\/o explanation. It is vital to our democracy that big tech companies can\u2019t affect the outcome of elections <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/n7Y7y2dQZ9\">https:\/\/t.co\/n7Y7y2dQZ9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Tulsi Gabbard (@TulsiGabbard) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TulsiGabbard\/status\/1154444505090629633?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 25, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is all just an algorithmic misunderstanding, though.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google&#8217;s automated systems flag unusual activity on advertiser accounts\u2014including large spending changes\u2014to prevent fraud, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/07\/25\/technology\/tulsi-gabbard-sues-google.html\"  rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In this case, our system triggered a suspension and the account was reinstated shortly thereafter,&#8221; company spokesman Jose Castaneda told the paper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We are proud to offer ad products that help campaigns connect directly with voters, and we do so without bias toward any party or political ideology,&#8221; he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This lawsuit, according to the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is believed to be the first time a presidential candidate has sued a major technology firm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Google&#8217;s discriminatory actions against my campaign are reflective of how dangerous their complete dominance over internet search is, and how the increasing dominance of big tech companies over our public discourse threatens our core American values,&#8221; Gabbard told the newspaper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;This is a threat to free speech, fair elections, and to our democracy, and I intend to fight back on behalf of all Americans,&#8221; she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Calls to dissolve big tech have been gaining steam among politicians: Sen.
