Between Microsoft kneecapping the Xbox One with dumb DRM decision and the Wii U years basically being an accidental beta for Nintendo’s later success with the Switch, the PlayStation 4 was free to be the home console of choice pretty much by default. And with more people playing video games than ever, that has led to a lot of sales.

How many sales? According to a recent financial report from Sony, the PlayStation 4 has become the fastest home console to reach 100 million sales.

This makes PlayStation 4 the fastest home console to reach 100 million unit sell in.

Faster than both the PS2 and Wii which were just behind.

It took PS2 a total of five years and 9 months. PS4 was just 5 years and 7 months. pic.twitter.com/g4Bk8sckYf

— Daniel Ahmad (@ZhugeEX) July 30, 2019

The 100 million mark is an impressive milestone for any console no matter how long it takes to reach it. Sony previous hit it with the original PlayStation and set the total sales record with the PlayStation 2’s 155 million sales. Meanwhile, Nintendo also achieved this with the original Wii, the Game Boy line of handhelds, and the 154 million sales of the Nintendo DS.

But after failing to hit the target with the beleaguered (albeit still successful) PlayStation 3, Sony has bounced back with the PlayStation 4. And since the PS4 has only been on the market for five years and seven months, it beat the record two months earlier than the previous fastest seller the PS2.

With so many PlayStation 4 out there, we expect support for the console to continue even after the PlayStation 5 launches (which is probably next holiday). In fact, we already know the new console will be backwards compatible with the older game library. So we’ll see if the PS4 can go on to even beat the PS2.

For more on PlayStation watch the new trailer for this holiday’s confusing PS4 exclusive Death Stranding and get ready for the upcoming PlayStation Cinematic Universe.

One of the easiest narratives to notice in this past generation of consoles (a generation that’s soon coming to end an end) is the dominance of the PlayStation 4.
