I’ll let you draw your own conclusions as to why. So while video games exploring post-apocalypses is nothing new (the games I’m writing about here aren’t even new, just ports) having two games about surviving in the wasteland drop on Nintendo Switch at the same time did feel a bit like a fate. But while they have some aesthetic similarities, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden and Zombie Driver: Immortal Edition are ultimately very different games. One is pretty smart and the other is super dumb.

This isn’t some kind of riddle. Zombie Driver is the dumb one. So let’s talk about that first, although there’s really not that much to talk about beyond the title. In Zombie Driver you control a car cruising through a zombie nightmare. The top-down arcade perspective turns it into a kind of Grand Theft Auto 2 meets Dead Rising. And powering up your vehicles with external upgrades as well as weapons you find in-game has a Twisted Metal car combat quality, too.

I don’t mean for “dumb” to be a complete insult. There are cheap thrills to be had mowing through the undead with four wheels. And the performance holds up pretty nicely with lots of zombie bodies, flames, bullets, blood, rain, and explosions on screen. But there’s very little staying power. I got my fill after a couple of rounds of wave-based survival and violent racing modes. As soon as the story asked me to pump endless bullets into a stationary boss with recharging health I tapped out. In the end I think I’ll remember this about as well as the upcoming inexplicable Zombieland sequel.

For something much more likely to stick in your brain check out Mutant Year Zero. It’s funny this came out on Switch so soon after fellow turn-based strategy game Fire Emblem: Three Houses. But whereas that game is all about the pageantry and grand strategy of guiding upstanding anime teens, Mutant Year Zero is gritty down-to-earth desperate tactics where you play as a literal pig.

Based on the tabletop game, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden has you controlling radiation-resistant Stalkers wandering through the remains of the world. Occasionally they’ll pick up an iPod or something and ask why anyone would want a flashing box with fruit on it. Good voicing acting helps the strong world-building. And while the working-class talking animal heroes baffled me at first, I grew to appreciate them in a funny Star Fox kind of way.

Battles in Mutant Year Zero are no laughing matter though. While there are similarities to something like “Fallout meets XCOM,” your three-person squad is ultimately much weaker compared to the vast majority of enemies you’ll encounter. Reloading a gun that holds three bullets takes up one of two actions for a turn. Moving especially far takes up both. Even as you gain strength by leveling up, finding new armor, upgrading weapons, and gaining new skills with mutation points, brute forcing your way through a battle basically never works.

Instead, you’ll have to wrap your head around the game’s intriguing fusion of real-time exploration and turn-based battles. Outside of combat you walk around the world like normal, taking in the sights (even if the blurriness of Unreal Engine 4 games on Switch strikes again). As you spot enemies, creep around them and turn off your flashlight to avoid drawing their attention. Split up your party to get in a better position. And ambush targets when the time is right.

In theory I like this level of thought you can put into preparation. When it all comes together you can pick off an entire horde of enemies one by one with silent weapons before they even notice. But in practice the game is so hard that this stealth feels like a requirement and not an extra layer of creative combat flexibility, and I kind of resented it in the end.

Still, there’s nothing quite like Mutant Year Zero. And even if you already played the game on other platforms there’s a new expansion, Seed of Evil, out alongside this Switch release.
