AT&T and Badger Technologies are working on<\/a> autonomous robots with 5G wireless networking capabilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

Designed for retail use, the androids would identify out-of-stock, mispriced, or misplaced products, as well as potential hazards.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fifth-generation cellular network technology, known as 5G, provides faster speeds, more capacity, and lower latency.<\/span><\/p>\n

All four major U.S. carriers have now launched the millimeter-wave tech.<\/span><\/p>\n

AT&T’s network is currently available in 20 cities: Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C.; Austin, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Waco, Texas; Jacksonville and Orlando, Fla.; Louisville, Ky.; Atlanta, Ga.; Indianapolis, Ind.; New Orleans, La.; Oklahoma City, Okla.; Los, Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose, and San Diego, Calif.; Nashville, Tenn.; and Las Vegas, Nev.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is no telling where the new autonomous robots will make their debut.<\/span><\/p>\n

But while the advanced mobile data collection<\/a> systems can fill major gaps in the collection<\/a> and sharing of in-store information, they also put a strain on traditional Wi-Fi.<\/span><\/p>\n

Enter 5G.<\/span><\/p>\n

“5G is an important next step to helping ensure shared visibility across critical inventory, POS, and operational systems,” Badger Technologies CEO Tim Rowland said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n

AT&T’s network promises a more private connection, giving users more control over what data travels beyond the walls of their store and what data stays onsite.<\/span><\/p>\n

“These technologies will eventually equip robots with both the compute power and lower latency needed to increase revenue, improve the in-store experience, and elevate employees to better assist customers,” according to Mo Katibeh, chief marketing officer of AT&T Business.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Badger Technologies’ robots can help retailers make sure they have products in stock and in the right place, increasing customer satisfaction,” he continued. “That leads to increased revenue. That’s the power of data.”<\/span><\/p>\n
