A hiker said blasting a Metallica song from her phone helped scare off a cougar stalking behind her and her dog during a stroll in Vancouver Island, off Canada&#8217;s Pacific Coast.<\/p>\n<p>Dee Gallant\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kelownanow.com\/watercooler\/news\/news\/Provincial\/Don_t_Tread_On_Me_Vancouver_Island_woman_fends_off_cougar_by_blasting_Metallica\/#fs_77097\"  rel=\"noopener\">told <em>Kelowna Now<\/em><\/a> she and her husky, Murphy were walking on a road in Cowichan Valley when she felt &#8220;like something was watching them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The animal started creeping toward them, and Gallant realized it was a cougar when it was about 50 feet away.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FNSfa7qCw0w?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt was crouched down, doing that kind of prowl, predator walk that they do \u2014 that was when I waved my arms and yelled \u2018hey, you stop!\u2019 and it did,&#8221; she told the media outlet.<\/p>\n<p>Gallant said she had seen cougars in the area before.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Initially I wasn\u2019t that scared, I remember thinking \u2018cool that&#8217;s a cougar,\u2019 and then it was \u2018why is it still there?\u2019 before turning into \u2018oh my god it\u2019s coming toward me, I need to make it stop,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Don\u2019t Tread On Me: Vancouver Island woman fends off cougar by blasting Metallica <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/vb30S9M5g6\">https:\/\/t.co\/vb30S9M5g6<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 KelownaNow.com (@KelownaNow) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KelownaNow\/status\/1155606273729024000?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 28, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Gallant was able to pull out her phone and record video of the situation, while yelling\u00a0at the animal to \u201cget out of here\u201d and calling it a \u201cbad kitty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When the &#8220;bad kitty&#8221; didn&#8217;t respond, Gallant turned to her phone&#8217;s music library to find the most &#8220;threatening&#8221; song and decided to blast \u201cDon\u2019t Tread On Me\u201d by Metallica.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was the noisiest thing on my phone that would probably scare it, that was also the messaged I wanted to convey to the cougar,\u201d she joked to Kelowna Now.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MDh4zenkVbY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Luckily, it worked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as the first notes blared out it ran into the bush,\u201d Gallant said.<\/p>\n<p>The cougar is the largest of the three wild cats in Canada and is a formidable hunter, according to British Columbia Conservation Foundation&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/wildsafebc.com\/cougar\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Wild Safe BC<\/a>. They\u00a0are considered \u201cspot and stalk\u201d hunters and have extremely good vision.<\/p>\n<p>Wild Safe BC advises hikers to stay calm when encountering a cougar. &#8220;Make yourself look as large as possible and back away slowly, keeping the cougar in view, and allowing a clear exit for the cougar,&#8221; the organization posted on its website. &#8220;Pick up children and small pets immediately.
