(Photo Credit: Aurelien Meunier \/ Getty Images)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>After an unsuccessful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/tech\/flyboard-inventor-fails-to-cross-channel-on-hoverboard-1797605\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">attempt last month<\/a>, French inventor and former jet ski racing champion Franky Zapata succeeded Sunday in flying across\u00a0the English Channel on a jet-powered hoverboard he designed.<\/p>\n<p>Zapata, dubbed by some as &#8220;Green Goblin&#8221; due to his hoverboard&#8217;s similarity to the\u00a0<em>Spider-Man<\/em> villain,\u00a0zoomed over the Strait of Dover in just over 20 minutes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-france-flying-man\/french-flying-man-crosses-channel-on-jet-powered-hoverboard-idUSKCN1UU05R\"  rel=\"noopener\">Reuters reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Zapata took off from Sangatte, just outside Calais in France on a little platform powered by five small jet engines and carrying kerosene in a backpack. After a stop on a boat halfway through the roughly 21-mile crossing, Zapata reached Britain and landed safely in Saint Margaret&#8217;s Bay, close to Dover on Britain&#8217;s southern coast.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/shwc0LgyNDA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u201cFor the last five to six kilometers I just really enjoyed it,\u201d Zapata told reporters on arrival, according to Reuters. \u201cWhether this is a historic event or not, I\u2019m not the one to decide that, time will tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Zapata said the hoverboard reached speeds of 160 to 170 km per hour (99 to 105 miles per hour) during the crossing.<\/p>\n<p>On his previous attempt in July, Zapata fell into the sea while trying to refuel halfway across the water.<\/p>\n<p>A member of the Frenchman\u2019s team said the movement of the waves required perfect timing, and the landing platform apparently shifted slightly as Zapata descended.<\/p>\n<p>Zapata received a $1.4 million grant from the French government to help finance the development of the hoverboard.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1798688\" style=\"max-width: 635px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1798688\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/hoverzapata3-625x351.jpg?resize=625%2C351&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"625\" height=\"351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/hoverzapata3-625x352.jpg 625w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/hoverzapata3-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/hoverzapata3-650x366.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/hoverzapata3-141x80.jpg 141w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/hoverzapata3-130x73.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/hoverzapata3.jpg 690w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">French hoverboard star Franky Zapata cries during a press conference after he successfully crossed the Channel from France to England using a hoverboard on August 4th, 2019 in Calais, France. (Photo Credit: Aurelien Meunier \/ Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cWe made a machine three years ago&#8230;and now we\u2019ve crossed the Channel, it\u2019s crazy,\u201d he said, visibly emotional.<\/p>\n<p>Zapata&#8217;s attempt was part of the 110th anniversary of the very first cross-channel flight.
