One child’s trash is their own prospective treasure: An unopened copy of the 1987 video game “Kid Icarus” recently sold for $9,000 in an online auction.<\/span><\/p>\n

Scott Amos found the cult class<\/a>ic title in the attic of his childhood home in Reno, Nev., earlier this year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Hidden amongst boxes that I can only assume contain at least one Cabbage Patch Kid, various <\/span>Star Wars<\/span><\/i> action figures and Micro Machines, a Simon memory game, and a Spirograph, Amos uncovered a gold mine.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sealed game cartridge\u2014complete with 30-year-old J.C. Penney receipt\u2014originally sold for $38.45 (after taxes). That’s more than $86 in today’s rates.<\/span><\/p>\n

“It was kind of funny,” Amos told<\/a> the <\/span>Reno Gazette Journal<\/span><\/i> last week, admitting that he thought the cartridge was worth “a couple hundred dollars.”<\/span><\/p>\n

After contacting video game experts, Amos learned that he had “something special” lying on his kitchen counter\u2014well within reach of his two young daughters.<\/span><\/p>\n

He immediately called his wife to put the nest egg in a more secure location.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I didn’t want the kids pulling it down or coloring on it,” Amos said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the ravages of time (not to mention three decades’ worth of dust), his copy remained in fairly good condition: Grading service Wata Games scored the box an eight-out-of-10 and the wrapper an A (short of the maximum A++).<\/span><\/p>\n

There are fewer than 10 known factory-sealed “Kid Icarus” cartridges in the hands of collectors worldwide. It’s even more rare to find a vintage game with its original tag and receipts, according to Heritage Auctions<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Amos doesn’t actually recall buying the NES title.<\/span><\/p>\n

“I can remember the game,” he told the <\/span>Gazette Journal<\/span><\/i>. “My neighbor down the street had it. I remember it being hard, and I was never that good of a gamer guy.”<\/span><\/p>\n

The family man plans to split the proceeds 50-50 with his older sister.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We’re doing a Disney World vacation next month,” Amos said. “Instead of doing something responsible, we’re going to have some fun with it.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Set in a fantasy world, Nintendo’s 1980s platformer follows Cupid-esque angel Pit on his quest for Three Sacred Treasures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite mixed reviews\u2014praised for its music and mixture of genre-bending gameplay elements, criticized for its graphics and high-difficulty level\u2014”Kid Icarus” has risen to cult status.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sequel “Kid Icarus: Of Myths and Monsters” was released for GameBoy in 1991; and a third entry in the series, “Kid Icarus: Uprising,” hit Nintendo 3DS in 2012<\/a>, following Pit’s inclusion as a playable character in 2008’s “Super Smash Bros. Brawl.”<\/span><\/p>\n

In February, a rare mint-condition, sealed copy of “Super Mario Bros.” for NES set a world record<\/a> when it sold for $100,150 at auction.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nintendo reprinted the popular title between 1985 and 1994. But the first two iterations were sticker-sealed copies, buyable only in Los Angeles and New York during the test market launch of the Nintendo Entertainment System.<\/span><\/p>\n
