And the feisty indie publisher Devolver Digital must have agreed because they soon picked up international publishing rights for an HD remaster <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/820630\/Metal_Wolf_Chaos_XD\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Metal Wolf Chaos XD<\/em><\/a>\u00a0for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.<\/p>\n<p>I finally got to play the game and like many underground niche hits it turns out\u00a0<em>Metal Wolf Chaos<\/em> is entertaining because it\u2019s so weird, not because it\u2019s especially good. It\u2019s not quite on the rock-bottom level of <em>Night Trap<\/em>, which also got a loving modern restoration, but maybe it\u2019s the mechs, not America, that need to be made great again. While there\u2019s some nice (for the time) environmental destruction and nifty weapon variety, the sheer tedium of joylessly blasting through every level before a bullet sponge boss fight reminds me how these people eventually made the insufferable\u00a0<em>Souls<\/em> games.<\/p>\n<p>Still, this is a cool (if uncomfortably opportunistic given how dire America&#8217;s actual presidential politics are right now) bit of historical games preservation for something that could&#8217;ve easily slipped through the cracks. Plus\u00a0<em>Metal Wolf Chaos XD\u2019s<\/em> cutscenes are still completely bonkers and brain-melting, like Michael Bay\u2019s Japanese equivalent trying to make a <em>Metal Gear Solid<\/em> game. But maybe you should just look them up on YouTube. It\u2019s a time of great technological progress but also stark inequality. The people are so divided another Civil War might be imminent, and law enforcement has never been more militarized. To top it all off, the White House, the highest office in the land, may soon fall into the clutches of a fascist maniac.<\/p>\n<p>For those of you playing at home, you\u2019re right, I did just describe the actual state of America today. However, I was also describing the plot of the wonderfully gonzo and shockingly prescient original Xbox shooter <em>Metal Wolf Chaos<\/em>. With America winding down its final season, now seemed like the perfect time to revisit this tale of politics and rocket launchers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Gq0zoNQcaqc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>These are literally the things that happen in <em>Metal Wolf Chaos<\/em>. President Woodrow Wilson\u2019s descendant Michael Wilson and his old war buddy Richard Hawk become president and vice president, respectively. The other Vice President Dick who shoots people in the face then hops in a mech suit, exiles Wilson, and institutes martial law across the United States. Don&#8217;t blame me, I voted for Kodos. To save liberty, Punished \u201cVenom\u201d President Wilson acquires his own mech suit and fights his way across the country to \u201cTake America Back,\u201d to make it great again if you will. The President and the Vice President of the United States of America have space robot battle to the death and freedom wins.<\/p>\n<p>I think I might cry.<\/p>\n<p><em>Metal Wolf Chaos<\/em> was published in 2004 by FromSoftware, the creators of the <em>Souls<\/em> series. Its political parallels were already creepy enough during the George W. Bush era but in the age of Trump they\u2019re downright bone-chilling. The game only came out in Japan, perhaps because America wasn\u2019t ready for it, but only on the original Xbox, a western console virtually ignored in Japan. That hilarious contradiction is the perfect metaphor for the game itself.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1670073\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/metalwolf-chaos-1-625x469.jpg?resize=625%2C469&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"metalwolf-chaos-1\" width=\"625\" height=\"469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/metalwolf-chaos-1.jpg 625w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/metalwolf-chaos-1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you manage to track down a copy of <em>Metal Wolf Chaos<\/em>, since it\u2019s quite the collector\u2019s item now, don\u2019t get your hopes too high. Yes the plot is ludicrously entertaining schlock, but the gameplay it\u2019s married to consists of fairly unremarkable third-person shooting of a disturbing amount of American soldiers.<\/p>\n<p>But now that FromSoftware is riding high on <em>Dark Souls<\/em> love, there\u2019s never been a better time to revisit this franchise. Imagine reclaiming the country in glorious <a href=\"http:\/\/www.geek.com\/games\/sony-officially-unveils-the-playstation-4-pro-and-playstation-4-slim-1670000\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">4K<\/a>. Hunt down every threat to America with fun and varied mech combat options. Explore a lovingly detailed recreation of the White House and reflect on your political legacy before the bombs drop and a single bald eagle flies by. With the right gameplay, FromSoftware could beat Platinum at their own game with this premise. This could be the <em>Evangelion<\/em> meets <em>The West Wing<\/em> of video games. It&#8217;s Anime Force One.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/irmphsXkxCg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Even if we never get a proper <em>Metal Wolf Chaos<\/em> sequel, since 2004 other games have picked up its absurd political torch. Who can forget Raiden\u2019s nemesis Senator Armstrong in <em>Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.<\/em> He even says \u201cMake America Great Again.\u201d In <em>Saints Row IV<\/em> you play as the president running around the city like the open-world sandbox it is protecting the country from aliens. And while <em>Final Fight<\/em> predates <em>Metal Wolf Chaos<\/em>, Mayor Mike Haggar redefines the idea of a political ground game by beating up criminals in city streets with his bare hands. In the future, long after Emperor Trump has been betrayed by his followers and cast into the Sun, we will wonder how anyone thought mech-riding presidents were a joke.
