That isn&#8217;t the case this year. The biggest game of the month is Remedy&#8217;s <em>Control<\/em>. <em>Astral Chain<\/em> and the annual <em>Madden<\/em> are two other big drops, and there are other unique titles worth keeping an eye on. There may not be an overwhelming amount of &#8220;blockbusters&#8221; this month, but August has a wide variety of experiences for players to enjoy.<\/p>\n<h3>Control<\/h3>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ZpOAapuX9jQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Platforms:<\/strong> PC, PS4, Xbox One<br \/>\n<strong>Release date:<\/strong> August 27<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/games\/control-will-make-remedy-a-household-name-1743978\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Control<\/em><\/a> is Remedy Entertainment\u2019s latest third-person action game. Like <em>Alan Wake<\/em> and <em>Quantum Break<\/em>, the game\u2019s narrative focuses on the supernatural. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Control-PlayStation-4\/dp\/B07DPJ3LZQ\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Control<\/em> distinguishes itself<\/a> with its otherworldly Metroidvania-like environment. As you progress and gain new abilities, you\u2019ll unlock new areas of the map and gain access to older sections. As a fan of <em>Quantum Break<\/em>, I\u2019m looking forward to seeing what crazy powers I\u2019ll get to wield. Also, three-dimensional Metroidvania games don\u2019t come around every day, so that\u2019s a bonus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Control-PlayStation-4\/dp\/B07DPJ3LZQ\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pre-order Control on Amazon<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Astral Chain<\/h3>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/J3uphlRZw18?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Platforms:<\/strong> Switch<br \/>\n<strong>Release date:<\/strong> August 30<\/p>\n<p><em>Astral Chain<\/em> is the biggest Nintendo Switch exclusive of the month. Players take on the role of a police officer who fights alien monsters with the aid of a supernatural being. As is typical of Platinum Games, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Astral-Chain-Nintendo-Switch\/dp\/B07NQF74M3\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Astral Chain<\/em><\/a> features flashy over-the-top action. What makes the game different is that it isn\u2019t entirely an action title. A good portion of it involves detective work. What that entails is somewhat of a mystery. It\u2019ll be interesting to see how <em>Astral Chain<\/em> balances the two disparate gameplay elements.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Astral-Chain-Nintendo-Switch\/dp\/B07NQF74M3\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pre-order Astral Chain on Amazon<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Blair Witch<\/h3>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LFqVXEfv-xw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Platforms:<\/strong> PC, Xbox One<br \/>\n<strong>Release date:<\/strong> August 30<\/p>\n<p>Arriving 20 years after the original <em>The Blair Witch Project<\/em>, <em>Blair Witch<\/em> is August\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Blair-Witch-Xbox-One-Standard\/dp\/B07SJ2XZFL\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">biggest Microsoft exclusive<\/a>. Taking place two years after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/movies\/20-years-ago-the-blair-witch-project-brought-horror-back-from-the-dead-1794053\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">the movie<\/a>, you take on the role of a cop who is searching Black Hills forest for a missing kid. While the \u201cfound footage\u201d film genre is no longer popular, horror games are very much in vogue. In that sense, a <em>Blair Witch<\/em> game isn\u2019t such a crazy proposition. Based on the trailer, it looks like it\u2019ll be one of the scariest games of 2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Blair-Witch-Xbox-One-Standard\/dp\/B07SJ2XZFL\/?th=1\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pre-order Blair Witch on Amazon<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Madden NFL 20<\/h3>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nLSxjlZpCIE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Platforms:<\/strong> PC, PS4, Xbox One<br \/>\n<strong>Release date:<\/strong> August 2<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Madden-NFL-20-Xbox-One\/dp\/B07QPW7N6M\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">latest installment<\/a> features a new story mode called Face of the Franchise. What makes this mode unique is that users can play the campaign with a player-created character. In Franchise Mode, you get the chance to interact with other players between matches. There are also new \u201cX-Factor\u201d and \u201cSuperstar Abilities\u201d which give your character beneficial boosts. New features aside, this is still the same core <em>Madden<\/em> experience you\u2019ve come to expect. If you\u2019re a football fan, you\u2019ve probably already secured a copy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Madden-NFL-20-Xbox-One\/dp\/B07QPW7N6M\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Get Madden NFL 20 on Amazon<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Oninaki<\/h3>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/IzMwx7Qbysc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Platforms:<\/strong> PC, PS4, Switch<br \/>\n<strong>Release date:<\/strong> August 22<\/p>\n<p>I recently wrote a preview for Square-Enix\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/games\/hands-on-oninaki-is-an-emotional-action-rpg-experience-1797155\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Oninaki<\/em><\/a>. Brought to you by the developers of <em>I Am Setsuna<\/em> and <em>Lost Sphear<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Oninaki-PlayStation-4-Standard\/dp\/B07SH35NVF\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Oninaki<\/em> is an action RPG<\/a> set in a fantasy world. Its central theme is about life and death. As I detailed in my preview, the game has scenes that are surprisingly deep and disturbing. The hack and slash mechanics satisfy while the RPG elements offer a good layer of depth. Now, he and his team, Panache Digital Games, are delivering another historically-minded title. Spanning over eight million years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humblebundle.com\/store\/ancestors-the-humankind-odyssey\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Ancestors<\/em><\/a> centers on a hominid clan as it slowly evolves into homo sapiens through the eons. What\u2019s interesting about the actual gameplay is that should your character die, you&#8217;ll take control of another clan member. If they all perish, you\u2019ll have to start over. Like <em>Until Dawn<\/em>, <em>Man of Medan<\/em> is a mix of Quick Time Action sequences and dialogue choices. What\u2019s interesting about <em>Man of Medan<\/em> is that real-world events inspired its story. I remember <em>Until Dawn<\/em> dropping in August when it launched so I guess Supermassive decided to keep that tradition going. Of course, the big question is how the asymmetrical survival horror title will function on Nintendo\u2019s handheld\/console hybrid. At the time of this writing, it is unclear what form of online or local play <em>Friday the 13th<\/em> will have. Even if it isn\u2019t up to par with other versions, the idea of playing <em>Friday the 13th<\/em> on the go should be enough to entice players to check it out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Friday-13th-Ultimate-Slasher-Nintendo-Switch\/dp\/B07TFM4MTB\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Pre-order Friday the 13th: The Game on Amazon<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Rad<\/h3>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/odscEfmPaLI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Platforms:<\/strong> PC, PS4, Switch, Xbox One<br \/>\n<strong>Release date:<\/strong> August 19<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.humblebundle.com\/store\/rad\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Rad<\/em> is one of the quirkier titles<\/a> releasing this month. Developed by Double Fine, the game takes place after two post-apocalyptic events and has players running around a nuclear wasteland beating up monsters with only a bat. <em>Rad<\/em> puts me in an uncomfortable position. On one hand, I\u2019m not a fan of \u201croguelike\u201d titles since dying and starting from scratch isn\u2019t appealing. Yet, I\u2019m a fan of Double Fine and of anything with 80\u2019s aesthetics.
