{"id":154504,"date":"2019-08-07T19:19:05","date_gmt":"2019-08-07T11:19:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/featured\/-1798999\/"},"modified":"2019-08-07T19:19:05","modified_gmt":"2019-08-07T11:19:05","slug":"artificial-tongue-can-taste-subtle-differences-in-whiskey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itteacheritfreelance.hk\/test\/wordpress\/2019\/08\/07\/artificial-tongue-can-taste-subtle-differences-in-whiskey\/","title":{"rendered":"Artificial \u2018Tongue\u2019 Can Taste Subtle Differences in Whiskey"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/tongue-1-650x366.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"figcaption\">Scottish engineers, led by Alasdair Clark, built an artificial tongue using gold and aluminium (via University of Glasgow)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An artificial &#8220;tongue&#8221; that tastes subtle differences in whiskey could help cut down on the trade of counterfeit alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gla.ac.uk\/news\/headline_659435_en.html\"  rel=\"noopener\">Built by Scottish engineers<\/a> (who else?), the tiny taster exploits the optical properties of gold and aluminum to test tipples.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sub-microscopic slices of metal, arranged in a checkerboard pattern, act as &#8220;taste buds&#8221;\u2014about 500 times smaller than their human counterparts\u2014in the University of Glasgow&#8217;s artificial organ.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers poured samples of single malt Scotch whiskey from Glenfiddich, Glen Marnoch, and Laphroaig over the device, measuring how the elements absorb light when submerged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The process, which scientists call their plasmonic resonance, allowed the team to identify different types of spirits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boasting nearly 100 percent accuracy, the tongue was capable of discerning fine distinctions between distilled drinks, identifying the same whiskey aged for 12, 15, and 18 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We call this an artificial tongue because it acts similarly to a human tongue,&#8221; lead study author Alasdair Clark, from the University of Glasgow&#8217;s School of Engineering, explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Like us, it can&#8217;t identify the individual chemicals which make coffee taste different to apple juice, but it can easily tell the difference between these complex chemical mixtures,&#8221; he said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Glaswegians are not the first to make an artificial tongue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But they are, according to Clark, the first to make a single artificial tongue that uses two different types of nanoscale metal taste buds, &#8220;which provides more information about the &#8216;taste&#8217; of each sample and allows a faster and more accurate response.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;While we&#8217;ve focused on whiskey in this experiment, the artificial tongue could easily be used to &#8216;taste&#8217; virtually any liquid, which means it could be used for a wide variety of applications,&#8221; he continued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most obviously: identifying counterfeit alcohol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the recent deaths of several American tourists in the Dominican Republic, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pri.org\/stories\/2019-07-11\/counterfeit-alcohol-sometimes-containing-jet-fuel-or-embalming-fluid-growing\"  rel=\"noopener\">folks have pointed the finger at spurious booze<\/a>; some experts agree that the symptoms and circumstances fit the indicators of deaths caused by doctored drinks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Americans are largely sheltered from adulterated alcohol, thanks to the country&#8217;s rigorous regulations.
