Subway has jumped on the meat-free bandwagon<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Starting next month\u2014and for a limited time only\u2014the sandwich maker will test the Beyond Meatball Marinara sub in 685 participating restaurants across North America.<\/span><\/p>\n

The collaboration with Beyond Meat aims to explore new plant-based protein options, starting with the class<\/a>ic meatball sub.<\/span><\/p>\n

Drenched in marinara sauce and covered in cheese, the toasted hoagie features the very first Beyond Meatball, created just for Subway.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Our guests want to feel good about what they eat and they also want to indulge in new flavors,” Len Van Popering, Subway’s chief brand and innovation officer, said in a statement. “With our new plant-based Beyond Meatball Marinara sub, we are giving them the best of both worlds.<\/span><\/p>\n

“And, we are particularly excited about debuting a co-developed product that can’t be found anywhere else,” he added.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to research by the NPD Group, 70 percent of meat eaters substitute a non-meat protein in a meal at least once a week.<\/span><\/p>\n

With the addition of the Beyond Meatball, Subway customers can get their fix in more than 2 billion plant-forward sandwich, flatbread, and wrap combinations.<\/span><\/p>\n

“We’re excited to partner with Subway and are grateful that the menu team through to senior management has entrusted us as their innovation partner to deliver delicious plant-based proteins to their guests,” Beyond Meat founder and CEO Ethan Brown said.<\/span><\/p>\n

The LA-based firm launched its products nationwide in 2013; in 2016, it released the first plant-based burger sold in the meat section of grocery stores.<\/span><\/p>\n

Last month, Dunkin’ Donuts announced that it would sell breakfast sandwiches in Manhattan using Meatless Sausage, with plans for national distribution in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n

Competitor Impossible Foods, meanwhile, debuted its avant-garde meat analogue patty three years ago, and has since teamed with White Castle, Burger King<\/a>, and Little Caesars<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n
