Barber, the sixth chief engraver of the U.S. Mint, and the &#8220;S&#8221; in 1894-S indicates the U.S. minting facility where it was struck, in San Francisco, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/articles\/rare-1894-s-dime-could-fetch-1m-or-more-at-stacks-bowers-auction-01565034290?mod=RTA\"  rel=\"noopener\">according to <em>Barrons<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The coins were produced by the San Francisco Mint at a time when dimes were made of 90 percent silver and 10 percent other metals. In 1965, the materials switched to an alloy of copper and nickel, as the price of silver shot up.<\/p>\n<p>There are many theories as to why only 24 were made have been printed, but none have been supported by facts. The theories and stories (<a href=\"https:\/\/auctions.stacksbowers.com\/lots\/view\/3-J403W\/1894-s-barber-dime-branch-mint-proof-63-pcgs-cac\"  rel=\"noopener\">some are detailed<\/a> in the Stack&#8217;s website) only fuel the Barber Dime&#8217;s &#8220;legendary&#8221; reputation.<\/p>\n<p>According to the auction house, the coin is so rare hasn&#8217;t been seen in market in 31 years, when Stack&#8217;s sold it in January 1953. It will cross the block at the American Numismatic Association (ANA) World&#8217;s Fair of Money on August 15\u00a0as part of the E.
