But along with the additions, the new phablet also has one big, unfortunate, unnecessary subtraction. For all of its nifty features, Samsung has continued the baffling, aggravating, anti-consumer trend of ditching the headphone jack.

The Galaxy Note 10 now comes in two models: a huge 6.8-inch Note 10+ version and a more manageable 6.3-inch version. They sport a bunch of shiny colors, including one that refracts ambient light. And yet neither model comes with a headphone jack, picking up where Apple “courageously” left off.

The Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ are among the first phones to roll out cutting edge 5G wireless technology, even if the performance looks to be spotty in a way you’d expect for something this early. But the proven, convenient, ubiquitous headphone jack we’ve already been enjoying for years is nowhere to be found.

The Galaxy Note 10 runs Android 9 and packs a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset and X24 modem like the Galaxy S10. This power is put to use in 12MP camera apps that apply video filters and process AR data in real time. And apparently to build a bigger (non-exploding) fast wireless charging battery they ditched the headphone jack. That’s also why the smaller model has 256GB of storage but no microSD card slot.

Like previously Note phones, the Galaxy Note 10 includes a smart stylus S Pen for this phone/tablet hybrid. New motion controls allow you to control certain apps with the pen while not touching the screen and the SDK is now open to developers. No headphone jack though!

During the reveal, Samsung talked a lot about its new partnership with Microsoft, allowing you to use Galaxy Note 10 apps when plugged into a PC. Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella even took the stage to talk about collaboration. Between Nintendo, Sony, and now Samsung, Microsoft has really checked its ego when it comes to working with rivals. Maybe these hardware manufacturers should check their own egos though and bring back headphone jacks.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10+ launch August 23. Starting at $950 you’ll get some USB-C headphones at least, but no headphone jack.
