McCain<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and tanker <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alnic MC<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Straits of Singapore that killed 10 sailors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An investigation into the crash showed that a complex touchscreen system, on which sailors had been poorly trained, contributed to a loss of control of the ship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eager to embrace new technologies whenever possible, the Navy &#8220;got away from the physical throttles,&#8221; according to Rear Adm. Bill Galinis, program executive officer for ships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;That was probably the [No. 1] feedback from the fleet,&#8221; he explained. &#8220;They said, just give us the throttles that we can use.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which is exactly what the sea force is doing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The switch, rolling out over the next 18 to 24 months, will affect all DDG 51 Arleigh Burke destroyers using the Integrated Bridge and Navigation Service (IBNS).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1799589\" style=\"max-width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1799589\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/navy-2.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/navy-2.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1 690w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/navy-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/navy-2-625x352.jpg 625w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/navy-2-650x366.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/navy-2-141x80.jpg 141w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/navy-2-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Seaman Joseph Brown mans an older version of helm controls on the bridge of USS Donald Cook (DDG-75) (via U.S. Navy)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beginning next summer, the first in-service ship to be refit is the USS <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ramage<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the first new vessel to drop touchscreens will be the USS <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ted Stevens<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;When we started getting the feedback from the [Naval Sea Systems Command fleet surveys] \u2026 it was really eye-opening,&#8221; Galinis told USNI News. &#8220;And it goes into the, in my mind, &#8216;just because you can doesn&#8217;t mean you should&#8217; category.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We really made the helm control system \u2026 just overly complex, with the touch screens under glass and all this kind of stuff,&#8221; he admitted during last week&#8217;s American Society of Naval Engineers&#8217; annual Fleet Maintenance and Modernization Symposium.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That doesn&#8217;t mean the Navy is giving up on bridge touchscreens altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are, however, aware that these systems must help crews &#8220;quickly pick up&#8221; on situational awareness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The more commonality we can drive into these kind of human-machine interfaces, the better,&#8221; Chief Engineer Rear Adm.
