BROWN \/ AFP \/ Getty Images)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>SpaceX CEO and founder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/elon-musk-pokes-fun-at-jeff-bezos-blue-moon-lander-with-ballsy-tweet-1786687\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Elon Musk<\/a> still wants to &#8220;nuke Mars,&#8221; according to a hilarious tweet posted on Aug. 16.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1162218267932446724?s=20\"  rel=\"noopener\">Musk&#8217;s cheeky statement<\/a>, which has generated more than 177,000 likes and 23,000 retweets so far, is trending on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1162271711326167041?s=20\"  rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a>. He also tweeted the words &#8220;t-shirt soon&#8221; on his profile, hinting that there may (or may not) be some Red Planet-themed merchandise available to buy soon.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">T-shirt soon<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1162271711326167041?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 16, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>According to Musk, using nuclear weapons to hit Mars may cause the planet&#8217;s polar ice caps to melt and release an abundant supply of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which would generate a greenhouse effect that elevates the air pressure and temperature of Mars, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insider.com\/elon-musk-wants-to-nuke-mars-plans-t-shirts-2019-8\"  rel=\"noopener\">Insider noted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gV6hP9wpMW8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Musk has also conducted many interviews on the topic, including a brief visit to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gV6hP9wpMW8\"  rel=\"noopener\">Stephen Colbert&#8217;s late-night show in 2015<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is a fixer-upper of a planet,&#8221; Musk said on the show. &#8220;First, you are going to have to live in transparent domes, but eventually, you can transform Mars into an Earth-like planet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Musk then explained how Mars could become an inhabitable place for humans with the help of nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You would just warm it up. There is a fast way and a slow way. Pics are of 9m dome rotation &amp; Starship airframe behind windbreak. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/1cmOzkPlkn\">pic.twitter.com\/1cmOzkPlkn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Elon Musk (@elonmusk) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1158309825815699456?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 5, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Musk didn&#8217;t elaborate on his hilarious tweet, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/astronauts-test-new-spacesuits-for-spacexs-first-crewed-test-flight-1799697\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">SpaceX<\/a> has been making progress on the Starship, a spacecraft that aims to transport humans to the moon and Mars in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, SpaceX started working on two orbital Starship prototypes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/elon-musk-gives-sneak-peek-of-new-spacex-starship-prototype-design-1799171\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Mk1 and Mk2<\/a>, at facilities in Texas and Florida. These prototypes, which will be a bit different from the Starhopper, will have at least three Raptor engines and are designed to reach orbit.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/spacexs-starhopper-prototype-is-ready-for-its-biggest-hop-test-1799787\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">SpaceX&#8217;s Starhopper prototype<\/a> is also expected to complete its biggest hop over the weekend. According to Musk, the Starhopper will have to fly approximately 650 feet off the ground.
