Chick McClure\/Unsplash)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A first-of-its-kind mapping model tracks how hate spread and adapts online\u2014providing what researchers hope is a blueprint for stopping it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Analysts from the University of Miami and George Washington University developed a chart showing how &#8220;global hate highways&#8221; can bridge social networks, geographic borders, languages, and ideologies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Hate destroys lives,&#8221; GW physics professor Neil Johnson said in <a href=\"https:\/\/gwtoday.gwu.edu\/novel-mapping-model-tracks-how-hate-spreads-and-adapts-online\"  rel=\"noopener\">a statement<\/a>. &#8220;Not only as we&#8217;ve seen in El Paso, Orlando, and New Zealand, but psychologically through online bullying and rhetoric.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team focused on global platform Facebook, as well as its European counterpart VKontakte\u2014the most popular site in Russia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over a period of a few months, they mapped how clusters (groups or pages that build a community based on shared views, interests, or purposes) interconnect to spread narratives and attract recruits.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-019-02447-1\"  rel=\"noopener\">published this week<\/a> in the journal <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nature<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, suggest a sort of Catch-22 for social media companies and their users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While administrators are expected to aggressively eradicate hate content, banning trolls from one platform often compels them to move to another\u2014simply shifting the resentment instead of eliminating it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It is essentially a whack-the-mole game,&#8221; senior study author Stefan Wuchty, an associate professor at UM, <a href=\"https:\/\/news.miami.edu\/stories\/2019\/08\/mapping-the-global-highways-of-hate.html\"  rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a>. &#8220;Once you whack one mole it will show up somewhere else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It is counter-intuitive, but pushing hate groups from social media platforms actually has the opposite effect,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;It creates a more concentrated assembly of those groups on a different platform.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1801296\" style=\"max-width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1801296\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/highways-of-hate.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/highways-of-hate.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1 690w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/highways-of-hate-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/highways-of-hate-625x352.jpg 625w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/highways-of-hate-650x366.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/highways-of-hate-141x80.jpg 141w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/highways-of-hate-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">A researcher team mapped how clusters of hate interconnect to spread narratives and attract new recruits (via University of Miami\/George Washington University)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the core of the problem, Wuchty pointed out, is social media platforms&#8217; reluctance to work together and unite their policies for change.
