Depending on how you look at it, Sega&#8217;s <em>Yakuza<\/em> series is either the Japanese answer to<em> Grand Theft Auto<\/em>, the actual successor to the <em>Shenmue<\/em> series, or something in-between. But regardless, recent entries in the franchise like <em>Yakuza 6, Yakuza 0, <\/em>and <em>Yakuza Kiwami<\/em> have seen worldwide success.<\/p>\n<p>So with the series in a better place than ever, <em>Yakuza 7<\/em> is seriously changing things up. Check out this first trailer.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M9_L2TA0IEY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Two constants in the <em>Yakuza<\/em> series have been protagonist Kazuma Kiryu and the Kamurocho setting. But that story is finished. <em>Yakuza 7: Whereabouts of Light and Darkness<\/em> ditches them both for a new hero and a new backdrop. The game follows recently released prisoner Ichiban Kasuga in Yokohama. Kamurocho was a dense environment but not exactly sprawling. Yokohama promises to be three times bigger.<\/p>\n<p>Even more shocking is the revamped combat system. <em>Yakuza 7<\/em> replaces the 3D beat \u2018em up fighting with a turn-based combat like something from a JRPG. Even the detective-themed <em>Yakuza<\/em> spin-off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/games\/hands-on-segas-judgment-is-yakuza-meets-phoenix-wright-1773723\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Judgment<\/em><\/a>\u00a0didn\u2019t do anything this radical. The change is so huge Sega initially teased it with an April Fool\u2019s Day Joke. But it\u2019s real.<\/p>\n<p><em>Yakuza 7<\/em> launches in Japan in January 2020 and worldwide later that year. For all of its changes, we&#8217;re still holding out hope Majima makes some kind of an cameo.
