When there are dozens of different services to choose from including Disney, NBC, Netflix, HBO, Apple, and who knows what else, a new service will sell you all those other services in one convenient bundle. Popular media server Plex is now expanding its streaming options, and it sounds like the “joke” will be a fact sooner than we know it.

Currently, Plex is a media server. You integrate it into your home network to access all of your stored media, like movies or music or pictures, on any other connected device. It’s a useful tool. We’ve given it high marks over on our sister site PCMag.com. But it does take a little bit of technical knowledge to set up.

Offering a streaming service would make Plex that much more appealing. But instead of wasting money on even more original content, Plex’s new service will offer free movies and TV shows from partners like Warner Bros. supported by commercials.

Even more exciting though is what Plex has planned for 2020. Basically Plex wants to be this “cable for streaming services” idea everyone figured was coming. In theory you’ll be able to subscribe to every other streaming TV service, as well as purchase video on demand content, right within one Plex hub app that’s already installed on your smart TV or something. Sounds great, but we’re not sure how many services would be willing to play ball. And without a comprehensive catalog, the function loses its appeal.

Variety has a much more detailed rundown of Plex’s plans you should read if you’re interested.
