{"id":160320,"date":"2019-09-05T17:31:29","date_gmt":"2019-09-05T09:31:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/featured\/-1802938\/"},"modified":"2019-09-05T17:31:29","modified_gmt":"2019-09-05T09:31:29","slug":"youtube-fined-170m-for-alleged-child-privacy-law-violation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itteacheritfreelance.hk\/test\/wordpress\/2019\/09\/05\/youtube-fined-170m-for-alleged-child-privacy-law-violation\/","title":{"rendered":"YouTube Fined $170M For Alleged Child Privacy Law Violation"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/youtube-3-650x366.jpeg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"figcaption\">YouTube (via Christian Wiediger\/Unsplash)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google and subsidiary YouTube are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/news-events\/press-releases\/2019\/09\/google-youtube-will-pay-record-170-million-alleged-violations\"  rel=\"noopener\">being fined<\/a> a record $170 million for alleged violations of children&#8217;s privacy law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Federal Trade Commission and New York Attorney General claim YouTube illegally collected personal information from kids without parental consent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The settlement requires the tech titans to pay $136 million to the FTC and $34 million to New York state for breaching the Children&#8217;s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) Rule.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the complaint, YouTube collected personal information (in the form of cookies) from viewers of child-directed channels\u2014without first notifying parents and getting consent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The streaming service then &#8220;earned millions of dollars&#8221; using those identifiers to deliver targeted ads to viewers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;YouTube touted its popularity with children to prospective corporate clients,&#8221; FTC Chairman Joe Simons said in a statement. &#8220;Yet when it came to complying with COPPA, the company refuses to acknowledge that portions of its platform were clearly directed to kids.
