They’ve also made plenty of niche gimmicky peripherals that either flame out or become smash successes. They’re a toy maker. And coming to terms with these nuances of the company is just a fact a life for Nintendo fans. I think it’s great. I loved the Wii. But hardcore purists tend to balk whenever Nintendo wades into these weirder casual waters.

The Nintendo Switch so far has done a great job balancing these dual philosophies. It has some of the greatest, and most gamer-friendly entries in beloved Nintendo series like Mario and Zelda. It also has a surprising amount of hardcore third-party support. And even the handheld/console hybrid gimmick only enhances traditional gameplay instead of fundamentally changing it. If you just want to play some video games, the Switch works for you.

But someone at Nintendo must’ve gotten itchy about not being weird again because here’s a new trailer for some kind of Nintendo Switch hoop controller. Sure!

What is this exercise hoop-looking thing? We never see a screen or gameplay, so all we have to go on is the device itself and how the actors play with it. Users insert the Joy-Con into the firm but stretchy ring and appear to do motion control exercises with it. There’s also another hoop you wrap around your thigh. Many are guessing this will be for the Switch’s equivalent of Wii Sports or Wii Fit. If Nintendo wants the Switch to hit Wii numbers, we understand why they would make games with massive mainstream appeal.

We also find the timing on this video kind of funny. Nintendo released it the night following a Nintendo Direct full of traditional Switch games. It’s like the time they revealed the kid-focused Nintendo Labo cardboard creativity playsets right after a normal Nintendo Direct. Gotta placate the fans before branching off into the bizarre again.

Nintendo says we can expect to learn more about this “new experience for Nintendo Switch” next week on September 12, just in time for the Tokyo Games Show. In the meantime, here are some cool Nintendo Switch games to play right now and look forward to the upcoming Nintendo Switch Lite.

Nintendo has made some of the best, most genre-defining video games of all time.
