{"id":161628,"date":"2019-09-11T21:27:33","date_gmt":"2019-09-11T13:27:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/featured\/-1803647\/"},"modified":"2019-09-11T21:27:33","modified_gmt":"2019-09-11T13:27:33","slug":"mits-color-changing-ink-lets-you-customize-shoes-phone-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itteacheritfreelance.hk\/test\/wordpress\/2019\/09\/11\/mits-color-changing-ink-lets-you-customize-shoes-phone-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"MIT\u2019s Color-Changing Ink Lets You Customize Shoes, Phone Cases"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/color-3-650x366.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"figcaption\">Projecting deactivation colors onto the 3D object to achieve the desired texture (via MIT CSAIL)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite all of our achievements, humans still can not camouflage ourselves beyond clothes and face paint.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inanimate objects, however, are another story.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A team from MIT&#8217;s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csail.mit.edu\/news\/objects-can-now-change-colors-chameleon\"  rel=\"noopener\">developed a method<\/a> of changing items&#8217; colors when exposed to ultraviolet and visible light sources.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dubbed &#8220;PhotoChromeleon,&#8221; the system uses a mix of cyan, magenta, and yellow (CMY) photochromic dyes that can be sprayed or painted onto the surface of any object to transform its hue.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fully reversible process can be repeated infinitely to customize everything from cars to shoes.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/rGnAAJEBFUU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;This special type of dye could enable a whole myriad of customization options that could improve manufacturing efficiency and reduce overall waste,&#8221; according to CSAIL postdoc Yuhua Jin, lead author on a new paper about the project. &#8220;Users could personalize their belongings and appearance on a daily basis, without the need to buy the same object multiple times in different colors and styles.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PhotoChromeleon builds on the team&#8217;s previous &#8220;ColorMod&#8221; platform, which uses a 3D printer to fabricate items that change color\u2014but only from its original shade to transparent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CSAIL&#8217;s new ink invention, however, lets the user&#8217;s imagination run wild: paint multicolor zebra stripes or a sweeping landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Simply place the object\u2014your phone case, for example\u2014inside a box with a project and ultraviolet light.
