We need to do all we can to protect the public from tobacco-related disease and death, and prevent e-cigarettes from becoming an on-ramp to nicotine addiction for a generation of youth. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HHSGov?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@HHSGov<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Melania Trump (@FLOTUS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FLOTUS\/status\/1171095740510277632?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 9, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent reports of vaping-related respiratory illnesses have amplified concerns and spurred the White House to action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have registered six deaths\u2014including a 50-year-old Kansan who passed away this week\u2014and more than 450 possible cases of severe lung injury in 33 states, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">USA Today<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/nation\/2019\/09\/11\/kansas-reports-6th-death-related-vaping-lung-illness\/2283959001\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Once finalized, this compliance policy will serve as a powerful tool that the FDA can use to combat the troubling trend of youth e-cigarette use,&#8221; acting FDA Commissioner Ned Sharpless said. &#8220;We must act swiftly against flavored e-cigarette products that are especially attractive to children.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June, San Francisco became the first U.S. city to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/tech\/san-francisco-is-first-u-s-city-to-ban-sales-of-e-cigarettes-1793475\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">ban all sales of battery-powered e-cigarettes<\/a>, making it illegal to sell nicotine vaporizer products in stores, or for online retailers to ship goods to Bay Area addresses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The state of Michigan followed suit, recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/tech\/michigan-first-state-to-ban-flavored-e-cigarettes-1802941\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">halting the sale of flavored nicotine vaping products<\/a> in retail stores and online. The restrictions extend to misleading marketing, including the use of terms like &#8220;clean,&#8221; &#8220;safe,&#8221; and &#8220;healthy,&#8221; which may perpetuate ideas that vaping products are harmless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cigarette consumption peaked in 1965, when about 50 percent of men and 33 percent of women were sucking down 100+ butts a year.
