{"id":163016,"date":"2019-09-18T21:31:27","date_gmt":"2019-09-18T13:31:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/featured\/-1804382\/"},"modified":"2019-09-18T21:31:27","modified_gmt":"2019-09-18T13:31:27","slug":"merriam-webster-defines-non-binary-pronoun-they","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itteacheritfreelance.hk\/test\/wordpress\/2019\/09\/18\/merriam-webster-defines-non-binary-pronoun-they\/","title":{"rendered":"Merriam-Webster Defines Non-Binary Pronoun \u2018They\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/dictionary-StockSnap-650x366.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"figcaption\">(via StockSnap\/Pixabay)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the 500-plus new words and meanings <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/words-at-play\/new-words-in-the-dictionary\"  rel=\"noopener\">added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary<\/a> this month is the seemingly innocuous &#8220;they.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The singular &#8220;they&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/words-at-play\/singular-nonbinary-they\"  rel=\"noopener\">has a long history in English<\/a>, but the term as a non-binary pronoun is relatively new\u2014and immensely important.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So Merriam-Webster has expanded its definition to include its use &#8220;to refer to a single person whose gender identity is nonbinary.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Several new entries are for words that address the complex ways we view ourselves and others and how we all fit in,&#8221; the firm said in a blog post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a significant step forward for people whose pronouns are &#8220;they&#8221; and &#8220;them&#8221;\u2014traditionally used to refer to a single person of unknown or undetermined gender.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This is HUGE for the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/nonbinary?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#nonbinary<\/a> community and, for society at large. ashley dye (@ashleycdye) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ashleycdye\/status\/1172599810601472000?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">September 13, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Geek sister site <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/merriam-webster-dictionary-adds-non-binary-pronouns-they\"  rel=\"noopener\">Mashable pointed out<\/a>, &#8220;along with being an important show of support for non-binary and genderqueer people, this is simply the dictionary doing its damn job.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other new entries regarding race and identity:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/inclusive\"  rel=\"noopener\">Inclusive<\/a>: allowing and accommodating people who have historically been excluded (as because of their race, gender, sexuality, or ability)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/colorism\"  rel=\"noopener\">Colorism<\/a>: prejudice or discrimination especially within a racial or ethnic group favoring people with lighter skin over those with darker skin<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Words can come and go in a language, but those that show staying power and increasing use need to be recorded and described,&#8221; Merriam-Webster said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can now find abbreviations like &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/vacay\"  rel=\"noopener\">vacay<\/a>,&#8221; &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/sesh\"  rel=\"noopener\">sesh<\/a>,&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/inspo\"  rel=\"noopener\">inspo<\/a>&#8221; surrounded by sobering terms like &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/deep%20state\"  rel=\"noopener\">deep state<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/red%20flag%20law\"  rel=\"noopener\">red flag law<\/a>.&#8221; Or sports (&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/pickleball\"  rel=\"noopener\">Pickleball<\/a>&#8220;) and games (&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/escape%20room\"  rel=\"noopener\">escape room<\/a>&#8220;) mingling with business jargon (&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/pain%20point\"  rel=\"noopener\">pain point<\/a>&#8220;).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, following Dictionary.com&#8217;s introduction of relevant and provocative feminist concepts &#8220;male gaze&#8221; and &#8220;toxic masculinity,&#8221; Merriam-Webster has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/Bechdel%20Test\"  rel=\"noopener\">defined the Bechdel test<\/a>\u2014a measure of representation of women in fiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In our latest batch of updates \u2026 we see a cross-section of newly established vocabulary ranging from the serious to the playful, from the technical to the informal\u2014with a big of everything in between,&#8221;
