(Photo Credit: Florida Power & Light)

Florida Power & Light is committing to EVs in a big way. In an announcement today, the Juno Beach-based company revealed that its would be rolling out 1,000 new EV charging points at 600 stations.

They’ll be distributed across 100 different locations. Some will serve employees of large corporations in the area like Office Depot. Shopping malls, public schools and municipal buildings are also in the mix, as are popular tourist spots like Lion Country Safari.

Naturally, each charging point will be accompanied by a dedicated EV-only parking space.

It’s still early days for the project and only about 20% of the install locations have been finalized. Wherever they wind up, Floridians and visitors won’t have to worry about whether their vehicles can tap into the chargers. They’re equipped with universal plugs.

CEO Eric Silagy says the expanded EV charging network is a big part of FPL’s commitment to sustainability. The chargers aren’t the only thing FPL is installing on a massive scale. The company also has plans in place to add 30 million solar panels over the next decade.

Building more infrastructure for consumer EVs is a step in the right direction. The next major step is to prepare for the arrival of commercial EVs like delivery vans, garbage trucks, and buses.

FPL is testing those waters as we speak. They’re currently helping retrofit five buses for the School District of West Palm Beach. It’s hoped that the pilot project will serve as an example that can be applied to school districts across the state.

In addition to providing zero-emissions mass transit, FPL will also look at using the buses for energy storage. The massive batteries can be topped off when power demands are low and pump power back into the grid during peak hours. They could also prove invaluable when recovering from harsh weather like the kinds Floridians just dealt with.

More on Geek.com:

Amazon Just Ordered 100,000 Electric Delivery Vans From Rivian

San Diego to Build Charging Stations for 3,000 Electric Buses, Trucks

Additive Breakthrough Makes EV Batteries Suck Less in the Cold

A new initiative by Florida Power & Light aims to to install 1,000+ charging ports at 100+ locations across Florida, including major roadways, large employers and popular tourism destinations.
