The massively popular YouTube streamer, with a humongous audience of children, has been guilty of everything from \u201cironic\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/tech\/disney-youtube-distance-themselves-from-pewdiepie-after-anti-semitic-jokes-1688751\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">antisemitism<\/a>\u00a0to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/culture\/pewdiepie-cancels-50000-donation-to-anti-hate-group-after-fan-backlash-1803902\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">cancelling pledges<\/a> for charities that help fight said antisemitism. He\u2019s Not Good.<\/p>\n<p>But authoritarian regimes are also Not Good. And in getting himself banned in China, PewDiePie has pulled a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/television\/south-park-creators-issue-mock-apology-after-china-bans-episode-band-in-china-1806664\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>South Park<\/em><\/a>\u00a0and picked a fight with a villain even bigger and more obnoxious than him.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8HehfOtRbUk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Online the absolute worst thing you could say about China\u2019s president Xi Jinping is say he looks like famous honey-loving cartoon bear Winnie the Pooh. It really bothers him. That\u2019s why the character has been banned in China. That\u2019s why this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/games\/international-incident-takes-down-taiwanese-horror-game-devotion-1776163\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Taiwanese horror game<\/a>\u00a0got taken down from Steam. And by making this comparison himself, that\u2019s how PewDiePie got banned in China. If you search for his videos on Chinese YouTube, nothing will show up. For nearly any other reason, that would be great. But not like this.<\/p>\n<p>This of course ties back to gamer culture\u2019s current war on China following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/games\/blizzard-faces-wide-backlash-over-hong-kong-hearthstone-ban-1807143\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Blizzard\u2019s controversial decision<\/a>\u00a0to ban a pro <em>Hearthstone<\/em> player for supporting Hong Kong\u2019s protests for democracy. PewDiePie talked about this event as well as the NBA\u2019s own issues with lucrative Chinese sponsorships.<\/p>\n<p>And really it\u2019s fascinating how these debates about China aren\u2019t falling neatly along political lines in the West. I\u2019m still convinced Republican Ted Cruz\u2019s reasons for denouncing Blizzard&#8217;s China appeasement aren\u2019t quite the same as socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez\u2019s reasons (and her reasons are personally probably a lot closer to mine). But all of us, including PewDiePie, still sort of came to the same conclusion.
