(Photo Credit: Brent Beaven \/ New Zealand Department of Conservation)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The people have spoken: The endangered yellow-eyed penguin has been named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.birdoftheyear.org.nz\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">New Zealand&#8217;s Bird of the Year 2019<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also known as hoiho or tarakaka, the endemic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/climate-change-marches-emperor-penguins-toward-death-1809790\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">species<\/a> received the most &#8220;number one&#8221; votes in a country-wide election.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2019\/nov\/11\/endangered-hoiho-penguin-wins-new-zealands-bird-of-the-year-poll\"  rel=\"noopener\">Described<\/a> by <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as an &#8220;antisocial penguin that communicates by screaming,&#8221; the animal won 12,022 out of 43,460 verified votes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which is more than three times as many hoiho are left on the planet: 1,700 pairs, between mainland New Zealand and the sub-Antarctic islands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The penguins\u2014the world&#8217;s most endangered\u2014are on track for local extinction within 40 years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An infectious outbreak in the mid-2000s played a large role in the population&#8217;s decline, though human activity (fishing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/confused-birds-litter-remote-island-with-elastic-bands-1808433\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">pollution<\/a>) has an equal (if not greater) influence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Sadly, many of New Zealand&#8217;s native birds are in crisis,&#8221; Forest &amp; Bird, the independent conservation group that runs the poll, wrote on its website. &#8220;Two-thirds of our birds are threatened with extinction.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An annual celebration of the country&#8217;s unique fowl, Bird of the Year helps &#8220;give them a voice.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is more than a silly census, though: The poll is taken so seriously, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reported, that competing campaigns invested in full-size billboard ads and voters were forced to validate their identities.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\">\n<div id=\"fb-root\"><\/div>\n<p><script async=\"1\" defer=\"1\" crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&amp;version=v5.0\"><\/script><\/p>\n<div class=\"fb-post\" data-href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/forestandbird\/posts\/10156437396857633\" data-width=\"500\">\n<blockquote cite=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/forestandbird\/posts\/10156437396857633\" class=\"fb-xfbml-parse-ignore\">\n<p>The hoiho has made history today! In a huge upset, the hoiho has come from behind to shatter the feathered ceiling, and&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Posted by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/forestandbird\/\">Forest &amp; Bird<\/a> on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/forestandbird\/posts\/10156437396857633\">Sunday, November 10, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As its name suggests, the yellow-eyed penguin\u2014the largest of its kind to breed on mainland New Zealand\u2014boasts a pair of golden peepers, as well as a band of pale yellow feathers around its head.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mostly silent, it makes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/worlds-loudest-bird-screams-in-potential-mates-faces-1808168\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">shrill bray-like call<\/a> at nest and breeding sites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;They&#8217;re a very antisocial species,&#8221; campaign spokesman Thor Elley, a University of Otago zoology student, told <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Guardian<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8220;They don&#8217;t nest within sight of other penguins.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reunions, however, are a different story: When mates return home to each other, they stand upright, flipper-to-flipper, and begin what Yolanda van Heezick, an associate professor of zoology, called &#8220;an ecstatic ceremony.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;They are screamingly happy to see each other again,&#8221; she said, according to the newspaper.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This marks the first win for seabirds in the competition&#8217;s 14-year history.
