After all, you can make some money by charging a person once for hardware, but you can make all of the money by charging people constantly for subscriptions. And these subscriptions were all over the place, from magazines to credit cards. However, after spending time with Apple\u2019s answers to two of the biggest potential service markets, video games and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/geek-pick\/cut-the-cord-and-subscribe-to-these-streaming-tv-services-1704574\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">streaming TV services<\/a>, we feel confident than one of these services is definitively better than the other.<\/p>\n<p>Apple Arcade is better than Apple TV+.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/e3zowKZEiLo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Okay, maybe I\u2019m a little biased. I do care more about video games than TV. But it\u2019s because I care so much about video games that for years I\u2019ve just been depressed about the sorry state of mobile games Apple helped create with the App Store. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/games\/hands-on-apple-arcade-is-a-throwback-to-good-mobile-games-1804128\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Apple Arcade<\/a>\u00a0represents mobile gaming finally coming back out of the wilderness of exploitative free-to-play scams that have plagued the scene for years. And while subscription services are clearly coming to all video game platforms, from Xbox Game Pass to Google Stadia, it&#8217;s something especially needed and new for mobile.<\/p>\n<p>Apple TV+ is just another subscription TV service. It\u2019s not something for hardcore fans of a certain niche. And its breadth of general content comes from packaging up other services you don\u2019t particularly need to get through Apple. The obvious exceptions are the original shows. But at least right now, they\u2019re no selling point.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2rFz4b6cho8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>If nothing else, Apple\u2019s original shows do feel like shows Apple would make. And not just because the characters are all lovingly using iPhones. Conspicuously expensive, slick, glossy, warm and fuzzy futuristic appeals to some kind of vaguely centrist global and optimism are fantastic for selling a product. But when applied to actual stories it leaves them feeling hollow and overly engineered, not unlike the worst algorithm-driven Netflix shows.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, I thought a lot about Netflix, particularly its original debut hit <em>House of Cards<\/em>, when watching <em>The Morning Show<\/em>, Apple\u2019s star-powered <em>Newsroom<\/em>-esque $300 million dollar flagship show. Both shows get good use out of their recognizable actors like Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston. Both feature questionable topical amorality, although Steve Carell\u2019s fake Matt Lauer has nothing on actual Kevin Spacey. And both shows are bad but trashy and watchable in a way that convinces you to keep them on in the background. Still bad, though.<\/p>\n<p>One bad show wouldn\u2019t be such a big deal if <em>The Morning Show<\/em> didn\u2019t represent like a quarter of Apple TV+\u2019s entire original output so far. What else is there? Blind Jason Momoa? Pass. A space race drama from the <em>Battlestar Galactica<\/em> people? Seems promising but also niche. That Emily Dickinson thing? Sounds fun and I like John Mulaney. But then what else? And don\u2019t tell me it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/television\/shyamalans-servant-trailer-teases-a-babysitting-nightmare-1809600\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">M. Night Shyamalan<\/a>. Even with their libraries of legacy content being snatched up by rights holders, Netflix and Hulu and Amazon Prime all have original shows people actually care for and talk about. Nothing on Apple TV+ right now looks like it\u2019ll have that same trendsetting effect on viewers. And the market is too crowded to hope consumers will just patiently wait.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/C1HfRL1zAjg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>But Apple Arcade is having that effect on mobile gamers. Part of it is quantity. Recently I covered over<a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/games\/21-tiny-reviews-of-21-big-apple-arcade-games-1808867\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"> twenty intriguing Apple Arcade games<\/a>\u00a0on the service, which means there are over eighty I haven\u2019t even touched. But it\u2019s quality, too. Apple Arcade has legit premium gaming experiences from celebrated creators that people are raving about. <em>Sayonara Wild Hearts! Grindstone! Overland!<\/em> Granted, not all of these games are exclusive to Apple Arcade. Some of them I prefer playing on other platforms like the Nintendo Switch. But overall Apple Arcade has so many more real reasons you should consider subscribing.<\/p>\n<p>When Apple TV+ was first revealed we learned that anyone who purchased a new Apple product would get a year for free. I thought it was weird that this deal was limited to Apple TV+ and not also Apple Arcade, which also costs $5 per month. What it because TV is still more mainstream than games? But after now using both I know the actual answer. Where do you start?<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<h3>2. <\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Netflix-Logo.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/r.zdbb.net\/u\/2pks\">Netflix<\/a> is still arguably the biggest name in streaming TV.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<h3>3. <\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/02\/maxresdefault-1.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Hulu trial screen\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p><p>Although it no longer has a free option, <a href=\"https:\/\/r.zdbb.net\/u\/2pkr\">Hulu<\/a> is a great streaming TV service that is worth paying for.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<h3>4. <\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/amazon-channels-top.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p><p>From buying to renting to subscribing to individual channels, <a href=\"https:\/\/r.zdbb.net\/u\/2pkq\">Amazon<\/a> offers a bevy of streaming TV options.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<h3>5. <\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/YouTube-TV-3-Main-Tabs-larger.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/r.zdbb.net\/u\/2pkp\">YouTube Red<\/a> subscribers can watch original shows from streaming stars, but YouTube TV lets you watch actual live TV.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<h3>6. <\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/slingbox.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p><p>Hook up a <a href=\"https:\/\/r.zdbb.net\/u\/2pko\">Slingbox<\/a> and watch the cable and live TV you&#8217;re already paying for anywhere.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<h3>7. <\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/direct-now-logo-e1495045945851.jpeg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p><p>You have to buy channels in bulk and still deal with commercials, but with <a href=\"https:\/\/r.zdbb.net\/u\/2pkm\">DirecTV<\/a> Now you get the real live TV experience delivered through streaming.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<h3>8. <\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/crunchyroll11.jpg?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/r.zdbb.net\/u\/2pkk\">Crunchyroll<\/a> is the best anime streaming service if you&#8217;re all about subtitles.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<h3>9. <\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/funimation-now.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p><p>If dubs are more your thing, <a href=\"https:\/\/r.zdbb.net\/u\/2pkj\">Funimation Now<\/a> is the anime streaming service for you.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<h3>10. <\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/curiositystream-e1499715637583.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p><p>If you want to stream shows and documentaries that actually teach you something, go with <a href=\"https:\/\/r.zdbb.net\/u\/2wh6\">CuriosityStream.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<h3>11. <\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/amc-premiere-top.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p><p>AMC Premiere just focuses on current AMC shows, but for Walking Dead super fans that might be enough.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<h3>12. <\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/boomerang-top.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p><p>With Boomerang, tons of retro cartoons, from Looney Tunes to Scooby-Doo, can all come back to you<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<h3>13. <\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/07\/fubotv-logo.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/r.zdbb.net\/u\/2wh8\">FuboTV<\/a> may be the escape from cable that sports fans are looking for. It\u2019s pricey, but being able to easily stream live sports and more from dozens of channels with only one subscription might very well be worth it.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"slide\">\n<h3>14. <\/h3>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/brown-sugar-top.png?w=640&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><span><\/span><\/figure>\n<p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/r.zdbb.net\/u\/2zc2\">Brown Sugar<\/a> has all of the classic Blaxploitation movies you could want and then some.
