(Photo Credit: CRASH Lab \/ University at Buffalo)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Venus lies within Earth&#8217;s orbit, but little is known about our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/was-venus-once-habitable-1804872\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">neighboring planet<\/a>\u2014especially its &#8220;dark side.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University at Buffalo researchers <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buffalo.edu\/news\/releases\/2019\/11\/009.html\"  rel=\"noopener\">want to change that<\/a>, though, with their unique spacecraft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bio-inspired Ray for Extreme Environments and Zonal Explorations (BREEZE)* project is one of 12 concepts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/tech\/nasa-to-fund-innovative-self-healing-spacesuits-venus-landers-1782478\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">selected by NASA<\/a> for its Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proposed by the university&#8217;s Crashworthiness for Aerospace Structures and Hybrids (CRASH)* Laboratory, researchers envision a stingray-esque morphing spacecraft, with wings that flap like pectoral fins.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;By taking our cues from nature, specifically sea rays, we&#8217;re looking to maximize flight efficiency,&#8221; according to project lead Javid Bayandor, associate professor in UB&#8217;s School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The design, he explained, could make use of high winds in the planet&#8217;s upper atmosphere, while still allowing scientists control over the vehicle\u2014which would circumnavigate Venus every four to six days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Add to that solar-powered instruments (charged every few days when the planet is illuminated by the sun) that take atmospheric samples, track weather patterns, monitor volcanic activity, and gather other data.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps most importantly, though, BREEZE&#8217;s &#8220;distinct versatility&#8221; could help scientists study the mysterious dark side of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/havoc-nasas-proposed-cloud-city-over-venus-1611853\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Venus<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you know that it takes Venus longer to rotate on its axis (243 days) than it does to orbit the sun (225 days), making a day on the planet longer than a year?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of these irregular cycles, large portions of the planet are shrouded in darkness for sustained periods of time, leaving them considerably different from the sunny side.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The technology behind BREEZE\u2014including its morphing wings\u2014could potentially be used to explore other parts of the solar system, as well as underwater environments on Earth, Bayandor said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">* They really love an acronym in upstate New York<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More on Geek.com:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/was-venus-once-habitable-1804872\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Was Venus Once Habitable?<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/havoc-nasas-proposed-cloud-city-over-venus-1611853\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">HAVOC: NASA&#8217;s Proposed Cloud City Over Venus<\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/science\/rugged-new-computers-could-lead-to-first-trip-to-venus-since-1985-1724366\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rugged New Computers Could Lead to First Trip to Venus Since 1985<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/venus-1-650x366.jpg\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\"><\/p>\n<div>The BREEZE spacecraft would circumnavigate Venus every four to six days, with solar panels charging on the side of planet illuminated by the sun.
