(Photo Credit:  Jeopardy! \/ YouTube)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s not often that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/culture\/jeopardy-apparently-bans-wagers-alluding-to-sex-nazis-satan-1784905\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeopardy!<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brings viewers, let alone host Alex Trebek, to tears.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But one contestant&#8217;s surprise Final Jeopardy answer left the moderator visibly choked up this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trebek shocked the world in March when he announced he&#8217;d been diagnosed with stage four pancreatic cancer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The disease\u2014the fourth most common cause of death in the U.S. due to cancer\u2014emerges when cells in the digestive organ begin to grow out of control.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The American Cancer Society estimates an average survival rate of about five years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;With the love and support of my family and friends\u2014and with the help of your prayers, also\u2014I plan to beat the low survival rate statistics for this disease,&#8221; Trebek said earlier this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Truth told, I have to. Because under the terms of my contract, I have to host <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jeopardy!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for three more years,&#8221; he explained, with signature drollery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following an initial outpouring of encouragement from folks like <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/patsajak\/status\/1103418697270681600\"  rel=\"noopener\">Pat Sajak<\/a> and contestants <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/KenJennings\/status\/1103418961759096832\"  rel=\"noopener\">Ken Jennings<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ananavarro\/status\/1103479229000364033\"  rel=\"noopener\">Ana Navarro-C\u00e1rdenas<\/a>, Trebek&#8217;s disease took a backseat to the show, which he&#8217;s continued hosting well into his 35th year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So it came as a bit of a shock when Tournament of Champions contestant Dhruv Gaur chose to honor the emcee with a costly message.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today&#39;s Final Jeopardy! includes a heartfelt moment with Alex and another win for Emma! <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/TournamentOfChampions?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#TournamentOfChampions<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/qWnKFUKL2U\">pic.twitter.com\/qWnKFUKL2U<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Jeopardy! (@Jeopardy) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jeopardy\/status\/1194102519229628416?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 12, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of attempting to solve the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/geek-pick\/watch-watson-destroy-humans-at-jeopardy-1315243\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Final Jeopardy puzzle<\/a>, Gaur wrote &#8220;We [love] you, Alex!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trebek read the answer as usual, barely pausing to swallow the lump in his throat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;That&#8217;s very kind of you, thank you,&#8221; he said, taking a breath. &#8220;Cost you $1,995. You&#8217;re left with five bucks. OK.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/dhruvg_\/status\/1194073687156285442\"  rel=\"noopener\">a series of tweets<\/a>, Gaur, a Brown University student, explained his decision:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I&#8217;m really glad I got the opportunity to say to Alex what everybody at the tournament was thinking,&#8221; he wrote, apologizing for &#8220;west coast spoilers.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Alex had just shared with us that he was reentering treatment for pancreatic cancer. A weekly nighttime syndicated edition aired from 1974-75, and a revival (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The All-New Jeopardy!<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) lasted five months in 1978\/79.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It wasn&#8217;t until Trebek stepped up to the podium in 1984, though, that the show really took off.
