Unfortunately, some of the numbers\u2014like the claim of 40 million developers\u2014are not just astonishing, they\u2019re wrong.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m not suggesting some nefarious intent to deceive. GitHub folks aren\u2019t like that. But by conflating accounts with developers, GitHub isn\u2019t helping us get any closer to accurate data on the developer population. More importantly, we don\u2019t need to artificially inflate developer numbers in order to establish their importance.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"fakesidebar\">[ <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.infoworld.com\/article\/3184495\/application-development\/9-lies-programmers-tell-themselves.html\">Also on InfoWorld: 9 lies programmers tell themselves<\/a><\/u> ]<\/aside>\n<h2>40 million, sure. But 40 million of what?<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s surprising that GitHub bothers to lead with the 40 million number at all, given that it immediately adds a caveat: 40 million refers to \u201cthe total number of non-spammy user accounts on GitHub as of September 30, 2019, regardless of their activity status.\u201d OK, so we\u2019re not talking about developers, but 40 million accounts is still impressive, right?<\/p>\n<p class=\"jumpTag\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.javaworld.com\/article\/3453276\/the-real-number-of-open-source-developers.html#jump\">To read this article in full, please click here<\/a><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/article>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GitHub just released its latest State of the Octoverse report with some astonishing numbers.
