{"id":174745,"date":"2019-11-14T22:57:29","date_gmt":"2019-11-14T14:57:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/featured\/-1810485\/"},"modified":"2019-11-14T22:57:29","modified_gmt":"2019-11-14T14:57:29","slug":"plastic-made-from-fish-skin-could-help-save-the-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itteacheritfreelance.hk\/test\/wordpress\/2019\/11\/14\/plastic-made-from-fish-skin-could-help-save-the-world\/","title":{"rendered":"Plastic Made From Fish Skin Could Help Save the World"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/plastic-2-650x366.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"figcaption\">MarinaTex used as a carrier bag (via James Dyson Award)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Climate change isn&#8217;t the only threat to our oceans: Plastic waste is killing wildlife and polluting the world&#8217;s water supplies at an alarming rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One young designer, however, may be able to help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twenty-four-year-old <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/broadcast\/read\/49904\"  rel=\"noopener\">Lucy Hughes<\/a>, a graduate student at the University of Sussex, won this year&#8217;s international James Dyson Award for her marine bioplastic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dubbed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marinatex.co.uk\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">MarinaTex<\/a>, the alternative design is made from organic fish waste and locally sourced red algae.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Translucent and flexible, the clever film looks and feels just like plastic. But its unique formula makes the material resource-light, requiring little energy and low temperatures to produce.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cherry on top: It is home compostable in four to six weeks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unwanted offcuts from the fish processing industry create a huge waste stream.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But those exoskeletons, skins, and scales\u2014which typically end up in a landfill instead of on our plates\u2014are actually the perfect ingredients for making strong, flexible bioplastics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One Atlantic cod, for instance, could generate enough organic waste to make 1,400 bags of MarinaTex, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sussex.ac.uk\/news\/people?id=50275\"  rel=\"noopener\">according to Hughes<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1810489\" style=\"max-width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1810489\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/plastic-1.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/plastic-1.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1 690w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/plastic-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/plastic-1-625x352.jpg 625w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/plastic-1-650x366.jpg 650w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/plastic-1-141x80.jpg 141w, https:\/\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/plastic-1-130x73.jpg 130w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">MarinaTex material in sheet form (via James Dyson Award)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Plastic is an amazing material, and as a result, we have become too reliant on it as designers and engineers,&#8221; she said in a statement. &#8220;It makes no sense to me that we&#8217;re using plastic, an incredibly durable material, for products that have a life-cycle of less than a day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;For me,&#8221; Hughes continued, &#8220;MarinaTex represents a commitment to material innovation and selection by incorporating sustainable, local, and circular values into design.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It took more than 100 experiments with different organic marine binders to refine the material and process, most of which Hughes did on the kitchen stove in her student accommodation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The James Dyson Award received some thought-provoking ideas this year\u2014and more female entrants than ever\u2014making the judging very difficult,&#8221; inventor and prize namesake James Dyson said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Ultimately, we decided to pick the idea the world could least do without,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;MarinaTex elegantly solves two problems: the ubiquity of single-use plastic and fish waste.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additional research and development will help the product evolve.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The invention is still in its infancy and I never thought it would make it to this stage, so it&#8217;s really encouraging to have the potential of the material acknowledged,&#8221; according to Hughes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I&#8217;m excited to now have the chance to undertake further research and development to explore all of the possible uses of MarinaTex, taking into account form, function, and its footprint,&#8221;
