Yes, the online encyclopedia isn’t totally free from malicious internet liars. But for the most part Wikipedia has provided tons of accurate information to college essay writers for years, barely asking for anything in return. And now co-founder Jimmy Wales is taking a break from begging for donations you should just give him already to start a new project. WT: Social is a new social network from the makers of Wikipedia.

Making a new social network is hard. For every evil data-harvesting Facebook and Twitter you have an Ello or Peach.Cool. Myspace was on the top of the world before crashing hard. And Mastodon right now is only for cool kids. However, Wikipedia certainly has name recognition arguably on par with Google at least online.

WT: Social also brings some very Wikipedia-esque philosophies into the social media space where they are desperately needed. As reported by The Next Web and Financial Times, WT: Social is ad-free to help make sure the service isn’t flooded with low-quality content. It’s very easy to research the sources of each news article to make sure they are trustworthy. And fighting fake news in general is the highest priority, with users able to highlight solid, evidence-based reporting.

On WT: Social you can also join SubWikis, fan groups dedicated to certain topics. Those groups might be a little small right now though because there are currently only about 50,000 users. Like the early days of Gmail, you can sign up to get a spot on the waitlist. Or pay to skip the line for either $13 a month or $100 a year.

For more on social media here’s why Twitter is banning political ads and check out Facebook’s dumb new logo.

Is Wikipedia the last honest place on the internet?
