Valve has just announced a new <em>Half-Life<\/em> game. And it\u2019s a virtual reality game. We\u2019ll give you a few minutes to process that.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s true. Valve made a splashy Twitter debut by teasing <em>Half-Life: Alyx,<\/em> a \u201cflagship VR game\u201d set in its acclaimed iconic shooter franchise that\u2019s been dormant for ages. And this Thursday we&#8217;ll finally get a look at the future of <em>Half-Life<\/em> through a screen strapped to our eyes.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We\u2019re excited to unveil Half-Life: Alyx, our flagship VR game, this Thursday at 10am Pacific Time.<\/p>\n<p>Can\u2019t wait to share it with all of you! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/BupFCxSrTw\">pic.twitter.com\/BupFCxSrTw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Valve (@valvesoftware) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/valvesoftware\/status\/1196566870360387584?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 18, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>As big as this tease is, it\u2019s still just a tease. So until Thursday all we can really do is feverishly speculate. The subtitle implies a focus on the character Alyx Vance rather than the main protagonist Gordon Freeman. Will it be the rumored prequel? Will it contain any of her storylines from the proposed <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/games\/read-the-plot-of-half-life-2-episode-3-and-find-peace-1713598\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Episode 3<\/a><\/em>? Will it set the stage for <em>Episode 3<\/em>? Will it have <em>Portal<\/em> references? There are just too many quesitons!<\/p>\n<p>And those aren\u2019t even gameplay questions. As a VR game, we have to imagine <em>Half-Life: Alyx<\/em> is being used to promote Valve\u2019s powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/tech\/valve-index-is-a-powerful-vr-headset-even-without-half-life-1785153\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Valve Index<\/a>\u00a0VR headset hardware. The <em>Half-Life<\/em> series is famous for pushing the boundaries of what single-player shooters can do. So what does that even mean in a VR context, a format where brief novelty experiences are arguably more palatable than lengthy uncomfortable campaigns.<\/p>\n<p>Also, is Valve is even capable of making single-player games like they used to? The company has been so laser-focused on <em>Dota 2<\/em> and Steam marketplaces for years that they\u2019ve felt irrelevant as a game developer. Plus we\u2019ve heard unfortunate rumors about the talented folks who\u2019ve essentially disappeared into the company.
