{"id":178900,"date":"2019-11-27T19:17:53","date_gmt":"2019-11-27T11:17:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/featured\/-1812041\/"},"modified":"2019-11-27T19:17:53","modified_gmt":"2019-11-27T11:17:53","slug":"animal-abuse-is-now-a-federal-crime-in-the-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itteacheritfreelance.hk\/test\/wordpress\/2019\/11\/27\/animal-abuse-is-now-a-federal-crime-in-the-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Animal Abuse Is Now A Federal Crime In the US"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/dog-Vijeshwar-DattUnsplash-650x366.jpeg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"figcaption\">Animal cruelty is now a crime (via Vijeshwar Datt\/Unsplash)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extreme animal cruelty can now be prosecuted as a federal crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/724\"  rel=\"noopener\">Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture (PACT) Act<\/a> was authorized by President Trump this week.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All 50 states have felony provisions against animal cruelty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in 2010, Congress made illegal the creation and distribution of &#8220;animal crush videos&#8221;\u2014in which people film the brutal killing, mutilation, and torture of creatures for sale and distribution online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, the underlying acts of brutality remained constitutional.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/buchanan.house.gov\/media-center\/press-releases\/buchanan-deutch-introduce-bill-combat-animal-cruelty\"  rel=\"noopener\">Introduced earlier this year<\/a> by Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) and Vern Buchanan (R-Fla.), the PACT Act helps close this loophole by prohibiting certain cases of animal abuse\u2014crushing, burning, drowning, suffocating, impaling, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After passing unanimously in the House and Senate, the legislation was enacted on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Animal cruelty is no longer just unacceptable. Ted Deutch (@RepTedDeutch) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepTedDeutch\/status\/1199106325369819136?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 25, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Animal cruelty is no longer just unacceptable, it is now illegal,&#8221; Deutch <a href=\"https:\/\/teddeutch.house.gov\/news\/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=402701\"  rel=\"noopener\">said in a statement<\/a>. &#8220;We can now finally say that animal abuse is a federal crime in the United States.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those convicted will face federal felony charges, fines, and up to seven years in prison.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The law contains exceptions for normal veterinary care, hunting, and conduct necessary to protect life or property from threat caused by an animal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Animals are deserving of protection at the highest level,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.humanesociety.org\/news\/extreme-animal-cruelty-can-now-be-prosecuted-federal-crime\"  rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The approval of this measure by the Congress and the president marks a new era in the codification of kindness to animals within federal law,&#8221; she said in a statement. &#8220;For decades, a national anti-cruelty law was a dream for animal protectionists.
