{"id":179295,"date":"2019-11-28T19:04:13","date_gmt":"2019-11-28T11:04:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/featured\/-1812137\/"},"modified":"2019-11-28T19:04:13","modified_gmt":"2019-11-28T11:04:13","slug":"former-go-champ-retires-from-game-ai-cannot-be-defeated","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itteacheritfreelance.hk\/test\/wordpress\/2019\/11\/28\/former-go-champ-retires-from-game-ai-cannot-be-defeated\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Go Champ Retires From Game: AI \u2018Cannot Be Defeated\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/go-650x366.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"figcaption\">AlphaGo Zero surpassed all previous versions of the AI in 40 days (via Google DeepMind)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former Go champion Lee Se-dol has retired from professional competition\u2014because artificial intelligence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The South Korean Go master gained global fame in 2016 as the only human to defeat DeepMind&#8217;s AlphaGo computer program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now he&#8217;s bowing out of the sport due to the &#8220;invincibility&#8221; of AI Go programs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;With the debut of AI in Go games, I&#8217;ve realized that I&#8217;m not at the top even if I become the No. 1 through frantic efforts,&#8221; Se-dol <a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20191127004800315\"  rel=\"noopener\">told South Korean news agency Yonhap<\/a>. &#8220;Even if I become the No. 1, there is an entity that cannot be defeated.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AlphaGo won four of its five matches against Se-dol in March 2016. But Lee&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/tech-science-3\/alphago-beats-top-go-player-in-best-of-three-match-1700896\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">comeback in the fourth game<\/a> remains the only time a human has bested the AI player.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 36-year-old, who boasts 18 victories in international competitions and 32 wins in domestic events, admitted he felt frustrated after losing the first three games to a machine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I rarely read comments on Internet news about me. But I got curious about how badly people were speaking of me after my three straight losses to AlphaGo,&#8221; he said in an interview with Yonhap. &#8220;Unexpectedly, few people criticized me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Frankly, I had sensed kind of a defeat even before the start of the matches against AlphaGo,&#8221; Se-dol continued. &#8220;People from Google&#8217;s DeepMind Technologies looked very confident from the beginning.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/11\/27\/20985260\/ai-go-alphago-lee-se-dol-retired-deepmind-defeat\"  rel=\"noopener\">In a statement published by The Verge<\/a>, DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis said Se-dol demonstrated &#8220;true warrior spirit&#8221; in his matchup with AlphaGo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;On behalf of the whole AlphaGo team at DeepMind, I&#8217;d like to congratulate Lee Se-dol for his legendary decade at the top of the game, and wish him the very best for the future,&#8221; Hassabis said. &#8220;I know Lee will be remembered as one of the greatest Go players of his generation.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Invented in China more than 2,500 years ago and enjoyed by more than 40 million people worldwide, Go (known as &#8220;baduk&#8221; in Korea) requires players to place back or white stones on a board and capture the opponent&#8217;s pieces or surround empty spaces to build territories.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But despite its apparent simplicity, the game features more possible moves than there are atoms in the universe, making it a tough competitor for traditional &#8220;brute force&#8221; artificial intelligence methods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google&#8217;s DeepMind AI division, however, took on that challenge with AlphaGo. The program uses a state-of-the-art tree search with two deep neural networks\u2014one to suggest intelligent moves, the other to evaluate each option. AlphaGo chooses what it deems the most successful maneuver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When pitted against top artificial intelligence Go programs, Google&#8217;s software won all but one of its 500 games.
