{"id":180473,"date":"2019-12-02T21:13:54","date_gmt":"2019-12-02T13:13:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/featured\/-1812311\/"},"modified":"2019-12-02T21:13:54","modified_gmt":"2019-12-02T13:13:54","slug":"australia-turns-on-mobile-phone-detection-cameras","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itteacheritfreelance.hk\/test\/wordpress\/2019\/12\/02\/australia-turns-on-mobile-phone-detection-cameras\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia Turns On Mobile Phone Detection Cameras"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/distracted-Alexandre-BoucherUnsplash-650x366.jpeg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"figcaption\">It&#8217;s not worth the risk (via Alexandre Boucher\/Unsplash)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world&#8217;s first mobile phone detection cameras are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transport.nsw.gov.au\/news-and-events\/media-releases\/lights-camera-detection-drivers-beware-0\"  rel=\"noopener\">up and running in Australia<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The safety technology will target illegal mobile phone use by drivers through <a href=\"http:\/\/mobilephoneroadrules.com.au\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">fixed and mobile trailer-mounted cameras<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The [New South Wales] government is serious about reducing our state&#8217;s road toll and rolling out mobile phone detection cameras is another way we will do this,&#8221; Minister for Roads Andrew Constance said in a statement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/tech\/australia-uses-mobile-phone-detection-cameras-to-catch-distracted-drivers-1805060\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Introduced in September<\/a>, the tech has been installed in 45 undisclosed locations across the jurisdiction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike traditional traffic enforcement systems, there will be no warning signs alerting motorists of the cameras&#8217; presence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;As we enter a notoriously dangerous time of the year on our roads, I want all drivers to know that if you use your mobile phone while behind the wheel of a vehicle in NSW you will have a greater chance of being caught\u2014anywhere at any time,&#8221; Constance warned.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a six-month trial, two permanent cameras detected a total 8.5 million passing cars\u2014more than 100,000 of which were driven by someone illegally using their phone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HD photography equipment uses artificial intelligence to spot lawbreakers\u2014usually browsing social media or texting. In one instance, the front-seat passenger can be seen steering the car while the driver had both hands on their phone.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HEcKg9I4yew?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s easy to tell yourself a quick glance at your handset won&#8217;t cause any harm. but , as Constance pointed out in September, a car traveling at 40 mph moves about 100 feet in two seconds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In that time a kid could have run out in front of you, you could have run off the road, you could have hit another vehicle, you could hit a cyclist,&#8221; he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/radio\/canberra\/programs\/breakfast\/mobile-phone-detection-cameras-roll-out-to-catch-drivers-in-nsw\/11538016\"  rel=\"noopener\">told ABC Radio Canberra<\/a>. &#8220;The list goes on.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite criticism\u2014the National Roads and Motorists&#8217; Association accused the NSW government of using stealth to trap drivers\u2014officials are moving forward with the program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Some people have not got the message about using their phones legally and safely,&#8221; according to Constance. &#8220;If they think they can continue to put the safety of themselves, their passengers, and the community at risk without consequence, they are in for a rude shock.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the first three months, as drivers and enforcers get acquainted with the cameras, offenders will receive only a warning letter.
