{"id":180767,"date":"2019-12-03T19:09:10","date_gmt":"2019-12-03T11:09:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/featured\/-1812486\/"},"modified":"2019-12-03T19:09:10","modified_gmt":"2019-12-03T11:09:10","slug":"millennial-engineer-helps-nasa-find-vikram-lunar-crash-site","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itteacheritfreelance.hk\/test\/wordpress\/2019\/12\/03\/millennial-engineer-helps-nasa-find-vikram-lunar-crash-site\/","title":{"rendered":"Millennial Engineer Helps NASA Find Vikram Lunar Crash Site"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/vikram-1-650x366.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"figcaption\">Vikram lander impact point and associated debris field (via NASA\/Goddard\/Arizona State University)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NASA&#8217;s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/image-feature\/goddard\/2019\/vikram-lander-found\"  rel=\"noopener\">discovered the crash site<\/a> of the Chandrayaan-2 Vikram Moon lander.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the help of Shanmuga Subramanian, a 33-year-old engineer from Chennai.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Armed with a laptop and an Internet connection (and a lot of free time), Subramanian worked for up to seven hours a day to locate the lander, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/india-news\/chandrayaan-2-chennai-engineer-shanmuga-subramanian-who-spotted-vikram-debris-says-got-good-response-2142416\"  rel=\"noopener\">according to NDTV<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vikram attempted to touch down on the Moon&#8217;s surface\u2014some 370 miles from the lunar south pole\u2014in early September.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But things <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/india-finds-missing-vikram-lander-on-moons-surface-1803329\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">took a turn for the worst<\/a> when the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/india-loses-contact-with-chandrayaan-2-vikram-lander-during-moon-landing-attempt-1803159\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">lost contact<\/a> with the vehicle shortly before arrival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Despite the loss, getting that close to the surface was an amazing achievement,&#8221; NASA said in a news release.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The US space administration&#8217;s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera team worked with ISRO to search for signs of Vikram: LROC released a mosaic of the site, encouraging the public to have a look.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Subramanian was the first to successfully spot the site, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ramanean\/status\/1179792967692734465\"  rel=\"noopener\">tweeting on Oct. 3<\/a>: &#8220;Is this Vikram lander?&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than a month later, after two additional LROC image sequences were published, the app developer and blogger again <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ramanean\/status\/1196077057928622080\"  rel=\"noopener\">proffered Vikram&#8217;s possible crash site<\/a>, highlighting nearby &#8220;ejecta that was thrown out of it.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After receiving Subramanian&#8217;s tip, the LROC team confirmed his identification by comparing before and after images.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The debris first located by Shanmuga is about 2,460 feet northwest of the main crash site.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NASA?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NASA<\/a> has credited me for finding Vikram Lander on Moon&#39;s surface<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/VikramLander?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#VikramLander<\/a>  <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Chandrayaan2?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Chandrayaan2<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/timesofindia?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@timesofindia<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TimesNow?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TimesNow<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ndtv?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@NDTV<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2LLWq5UFq9\">pic.twitter.com\/2LLWq5UFq9<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash;
