The recent free Zelda<\/em> DLC<\/a>\u00a0for Super Mario Maker 2<\/em><\/a>\u00a0makes one of the Nintendo Switch\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0best games of 2019 even better. This is a game about creative expression, about letting you make your own games. It can\u2019t grant your totally unrestricted freedom, and that wouldn\u2019t be ideal. But the more interesting scenarios the game allows you to dream up the better. And one of the best ways for opening up possibilities is expanding the different options players can choose from in their moveset. Running and jumping as Mario is great and versatile and straightforward. But with Link players can attack with the Master Sword, block with their shield, shoot arrows, and toss bombs.<\/p>\n

So in just the few days this DLC has been available, we\u2019ve played Zelda<\/em>-themed Super Mario Maker 2<\/em> levels that might as well be from an entirely brand new game. Mario Maker<\/em> has had plenty of puzzle levels in the past. Some of our favorite levels<\/a>\u00a0are more about testing your brain more than your reflexes. But Link\u2019s upgraded arsenal (and nostalgic sound effects) allows for stages that truly feel like 2D sidescrolling takes on class<\/a>ic Zelda<\/em> dungeons, and will have you desperately wishing there wasn\u2019t a stage timer.<\/p>\n

Our favorite Zelda<\/em>-themed levels for Super Mario Maker 2<\/em> come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Reimaginings of Ocarina<\/em> levels. A level where you swap between Mario and Link. A series of rooms locked inside the word \u201cZELDA\u201d in blocks. Levels that push the utility of bombs and bows to the limit by blocking up blocks and arcing arrows. But just don\u2019t read about them. Play them for yourself.<\/p>\n
