Instead of developing a CD add-on for the Super Nintendo, Sony created its own disc-based console. And for the past <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/games\/these-are-the-top-25-playstation-games-of-all-time-1812734\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">25 years<\/a>\u00a0the PlayStation has been one of the most enduring brands in gaming, surely humbling Nintendo in the process.<\/p>\n<p>It all came so close to being so different though. How close. Prototypes were made of the hypothetical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/games\/the-nintendo-playstation-prototype-has-been-fully-restored-1698764\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">Nintendo PlayStation<\/a>. A few years ago, the last one of those prototypes was found and later restored. And this February you can bid on this unreal retro device yourself.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8b0tpXyfV6M?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>As reported by <a href=\"https:\/\/kotaku.com\/nintendo-play-station-prototype-will-be-auctioned-off-i-1840485537\"  rel=\"noopener\">Kotaku<\/a>, this February the Nintendo PlayStation will hit the Heritage Auction service. These are the same folks that sold off a rare <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/games\/sealed-copy-of-nes-cult-classic-kid-icarus-earns-9k-at-auction-1798720\/\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Kid Icarus<\/em> cartridge<\/a>\u00a0for nearly ten thousand dollars. But whereas that\u2019s a game you can still easily play today, the Nintendo PlayStation is a true one-of-a-kind artifact when it comes to gaming history. So expect the open auction to wind up with a much higher dollar amount.<\/p>\n<p>At least, that\u2019s what current owner Terry Diebold hopes.
