Broom; &ldquo;Solitary&rdquo; by Albert Woodfox; &ldquo;We Live in Water: Stories&rdquo; by Jess Walter; and &ldquo;A Different Way to Win: Dan Rooney&rsquo;s Story from the Super Bowl to the Rooney Rule&rdquo; by Jim Rooney.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(I straight up giggled with joy when I realised Barack Obama and I read the same book this year: Irish phenom Sally Rooney&rsquo;s second novel, &ldquo;Normal People,&rdquo; about young love.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obama also included 19 more books he recommended earlier this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His top 18 movies of 2019 is slightly more relatable, with wide releases like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Booksmart<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ford v Ferrari<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Little Women<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as Netflix hits <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Irishman<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marriage Story<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Of course, there&rsquo;s also <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Factory<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a film from our own production company, Higher Ground, that was recently shortlisted for an Oscar,&rdquo; Obama boasted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I very highly recommend <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fleabag<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unbelievable<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&acirc;&#8364;&#8221;two of his &ldquo;TV shows that I considered as powerful as movies.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"320\" height=\"320\" frameBorder=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/B6qf8zFA639\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loadingembed\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How the man manages his regular personal and civil commitments&acirc;&#8364;&#8221;not to mention producing for films, television shows, and podcasts&acirc;&#8364;&#8221;and finds enough time to read a 691-page essay on the East India Company and watch Martin Scorsese&rsquo;s three-and-a-half-hour-long love letter to the mob is beyond me.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;Because while each of us has plenty that keeps us busy&acirc;&#8364;&#8221;work and family life, social and volunteer commitments&acirc;&#8364;&#8221;outlets like literature and art can enhance our day-to-day experiences,&rdquo; Obama said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&ldquo;They&rsquo;re the fabric that helps make up a life,&rdquo; he continued. &ldquo;The album that lifts us up after a long day, the dog-eared paperback we grab off the shelf to give to a friend, the movie that makes us think and feel in a new way, works that simply help us escape for a bit.&rdquo;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We&rsquo;re still waiting to see what tops the former President&rsquo;s list of the best music from 2019.
