{"id":207547,"date":"2020-01-09T18:40:26","date_gmt":"2020-01-09T10:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/featured\/-1815815\/"},"modified":"2020-01-09T18:40:26","modified_gmt":"2020-01-09T10:40:26","slug":"twitter-tests-reply-limiting-feature-to-curb-bullying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itteacheritfreelance.hk\/test\/wordpress\/2020\/01\/09\/twitter-tests-reply-limiting-feature-to-curb-bullying\/","title":{"rendered":"Twitter Tests Reply-Limiting Feature to Curb Bullying"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/twitter-1-650x366.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"figcaption\">Twitter tests limits on who can reply to tweets (via Twitter\/Mashable)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter is reportedly testing a new feature that allows users to set limits on who can reply to their tweets\u2014before posting them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The option, announced at this week&#8217;s Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, is another step toward curbing online abuse.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Handpick conversation &#8220;participants&#8221; from one of four categories: global (anyone), group (people you follow and mention), panel (people you mention), or statement (just you).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tweets from a public account remain visible to everyone, but only the selected audience can reply, <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/twitter-tests-limiting-replies\/?europe=true\"  rel=\"noopener\">according to<\/a> Geek.com sister site Mashable.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;It allows us to create a whole new format for conversation that didn&#8217;t exist before,&#8221; Twitter product manager Suzanne Xie said during a CES press event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the floor in Las Vegas, Mashable&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/karissabe\/status\/1214960957585158144\"  rel=\"noopener\">Karissa Bell noted<\/a> that you can not retroactively cache replies, so you must remember to change the settings before sending a tweet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trolls can, unfortunately, still hijack conversations by retweeting with comment.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I could see people getting annoyed when officials\/brands limit replies, this could effectively kill the ability to ratio<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Karissa Bell (@karissabe) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/karissabe\/status\/1214966082072535041?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 8, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This move comes just after Twitter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/tech\/twitter-rolls-out-hide-replies-feature-globally-1811552\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">introduced the ability to hide replies<\/a>: Users can still see and engage with sequestered statements by tapping the grey icon that will appear in the corner of tweets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Online harassment is an ongoing problem for social networks: Twitter and Instagram have taken steps to limit bullying, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/tech\/instagram-employs-machine-learning-to-stop-bullying-1755388\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">employing machine learning techniques<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/tech\/instagram-guilts-users-into-removing-nasty-comments-1794935\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">guilting users into removing nasty comments<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Part of the goal of the experiment is seeing what the outcomes are,&#8221; Twitter product lead Kayvon Beykpour told Mashable. &#8220;How does that influence the ratio situation?
