{"id":212225,"date":"2020-01-23T21:51:56","date_gmt":"2020-01-23T13:51:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/featured\/-1816946\/"},"modified":"2020-01-23T21:51:56","modified_gmt":"2020-01-23T13:51:56","slug":"coca-cola-wont-ditch-single-use-plastic-bottles-for-bs-reason","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/itteacheritfreelance.hk\/test\/wordpress\/2020\/01\/23\/coca-cola-wont-ditch-single-use-plastic-bottles-for-bs-reason\/","title":{"rendered":"Coca-Cola Won\u2019t Ditch Single-Use Plastic Bottles For BS Reason"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.geek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/coke-901263Pixabay-650x366.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"figcaption\">(via 901263\/Pixabay)<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While environmental campaigners fight tooth and nail to save our planet, Coca-Cola continues to destroy it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The drinks giant refuses to ditch single-use plastic bottles because &#8220;consumers still want them,&#8221; head of sustainability Bea Perez <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-51197463\"  rel=\"noopener\">told the BBC<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As one of the largest manufacturers of synthetic waste, Coke produces some 3 million tons of plastic packaging each year\u2014about 200,000 bottles per minute.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a 2019 global audit, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breakfreefromplastic.org\/2019\/10\/23\/brand-audit-report-2019-press-release\"  rel=\"noopener\">deemed<\/a> the top-polluting company (alongside Nestl\u00e9 and PepsiCo) by the charity Break Free From Plastic (BFFP).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos this week, Perez said the firm recognizes it must now be &#8220;part of the solution.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, Coca-Cola <a href=\"https:\/\/www.geek.com\/news\/these-new-coca-cola-bottles-are-made-from-marine-plastic-1806847\/\"  rel=\"noopener\">introduced new bottles<\/a> made with 25 percent marine plastic\u2014specifically, plastic polluting the Mediterranean Sea or found washed up on its beaches.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coke pledged to, by 2030, recycle as many plastic bottles as it uses and employ at least 50 percent recycled material in its packaging. But it won&#8217;t reject the material entirely\u2014for fear of alienating customers and losing sales.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People like plastic bottles, the company said; they&#8217;re lightweight (unlike glass) and resealable (unlike cans).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides, using only aluminum and glass packaging could increase the firm&#8217;s carbon footprint, Perez argued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Business won&#8217;t be in business if we don&#8217;t accommodate consumers,&#8221; she said. &#8220;So as we change our bottling infrastructure, move into recycling and innovate, we also have to show the consumer what the opportunities are.
