The first incarnation <em>Defense of the Ancients<\/em>, or <em>Dota<\/em>, wasn\u2019t a game but a mod. It was a fan remix of the hero unit-centric real-time strategy game <em>Warcraft 3<\/em>. <em>Dota<\/em> was indirectly birthed by Blizzard, which is why they weren\u2019t too happy when rival PC juggernaut Valve put out a game called <em>Dota 2<\/em> to massive ongoing success.<\/p>\n<p>Now <em>Warcraft 3<\/em> is coming back with the recently released remaster\u00a0<em>Warcraft 3: Reforged<\/em>. However, while it keeps the modding tools, its new policies seemed built to make sure <em>Dota<\/em> history doesn\u2019t repeat itself.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex-video widescreen embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kwG5ct900B0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Compared to its original release <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blizzard.com\/en-us\/legal\/2749df07-2b53-4990-b75e-a7cb3610318b\/custom-game-acceptable-use-policy\"  rel=\"noopener\"><em>Warcraft 3: Reforged\u2019s<\/em> new rules,<\/a>\u00a0however reasonable they sound, make it a pretty walled garden as far as game creation goes. Users can\u2019t use copyrighted third-party content, so no more bootleg <em>Dragon Ball Z<\/em> games. Blizzard can delete any custom game for any reason. And all custom games created in <em>Warcraft 3: Reforged<\/em>\u00a0automatically become Blizzard copyrights, a policy that would have drastically altered the history of <em>Dota<\/em> had it been around during the company\u2019s pre-Activision days.<\/p>\n<p>Naturally, PC gaming fans who love to create and mess around with whatever they want free from corporate influence aren\u2019t too thrilled about this. Modding is a huge part of the legacy that separates PC games from console games. However, this is the unfortunate trend. Bethesda tries to honor the history of mods in games like <em>Doom<\/em> and <em>Skyrim<\/em>, but with much more control than just sharing WAD files around. Meanwhile, even Nintendo now is open to user-generated content in games like <em>Super Smash Bros.<\/em> and <em>Super Mario Maker<\/em>. But that\u2019s because they can still ultimately enforce their own strict whims at the end of the day.<\/p>\n<p>Still, truly fan-made projects haven\u2019t stopped emerging from these gentrified PC gaming platforms. I\u2019m still not sure what <em>Dota Auto Chess<\/em> even is.
